Is this a P.I. block?
I have read conflicting reports as to whether a 428 C6ME-A block is a police interceptor block. Can anyone tell me whether or not it is?
Thanks, Mike |
If it has extra ribs in the main supports
it's a PI, CJ or SCJ. Take your pick |
I don't believe the PI had the extra ribs, only the CJ.
The only thing that designated the the 428 a 'PI' was the PI intake mannifold. Please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong as I don't have my FE bible handy. And of course, a CJ can be identified by looking for the extra ribs cast in the main bearing area, or more easily by looking for the large, roughly cast "C" on the back of the block. |
Chaplin,
C6ME-A = 68-76 360, 66-76 390, 66-70 428 C6AE-B, C6AE-F = PI hope this helps, these numbers as you probably know are somewhat inconsistant . As Perry says ,if you can look for the webs. good luck! Karl |
Traveler ,
also solid lifters, and I think improved rotating assy, Where is that Mustang guy ? he really knows this stuff. |
Solid lifters? You may be right.
Rotating assembly? I believe that's the 428 SCJ that received the LaMans connecting rods. In any event, when we're talking a bare block, none of these bolt on differences really matters much. I still say that when it comes to the 428 block, there's really only 2 distinctions; it's either a 428 or a 428 CJ. I won't really know for sure if I'm right until I get home tonight and look it up :) |
Traveller, sorry but your mistaken, I removed a 428 from a PI car and it did have the extra ribs.
|
All the PI blocks I have seen have extra ribs and are solid lifter blocks... As have a number of non 427, non CJ and non PI blocks I have seen.
My point is Ford did some pretty cool stuff in the 60's.. You really need to base your opinion on what you are looking at. I ran across a hydraulic cam 390 that was obviously pulled out of the 427 engine line it had the bosses for a cross bolting that were left undrilled, higher nickle content, extra ribs but was a 2bbl car. Very cool.. Also very confusing.. Although my intel has a C6ME-A as a 428 CJ. PI blocks from 66-70 should be C6AE-B or F.. That isn't to say it wasn't in a police car. |
What differance does it make, it is still a 428 FE and that is all I have to say about that!
|
I stand corrected!
The PI blocks do have the thicker, and extra, ribs in the main bearing support area. Page 39 in Steve Christ's 'Big-Block Ford Engines' backs this up. Sorry if I confused things. |
Check the below site. According to this, 428 C6ME-A block is a P.I. block.
http://pliverman.home.mindspring.com/index3.htm Is it right?? Or is the only way to know for sure to drop the pan and check for extra ribs? Thanks. |
I've always used the look-see method.
|
Actually Aumoore..
It makes alot of difference at 6000+ rpm.. Things start to flex and then they snap.. Below that all FE's do pretty well. |
