Cheapest Shelby based 427?
Guys, I see that most Shelby based 427s on this site seam to run $20-30K range, if one wanted a moderately built (not 550hp, a nice 450hp or so engine) shelby block based engine what is a rough starting point, say parts/labor broken out separately. $16/18/20 combined?

More like $30-40k minimum for a decent car. I've researched for six months and getting ready to start and I'm figuring $40k (+/-) to be on the road with a decent FE @ 450 hp.

If the bare block runs around ~$5 grand, where's your money going to rack up that additional $20-30 grand?
Look, I understand you can spend a lot of money on just about anything, but I'd be curious to see some it itemized account of a Shelby motor build up. My guess is there's some additional machine work, however, aluminum is ALWAYS cheaper to machine than cast iron. George Anderson, you out there? |

Hello,
Most of the engine components for a 450 hp eng cost the same as a 550 hp engine. One area that you could save $ on is a crankshaft. The $25 to $30k engines use $2500 billet cranks. I think I could build a 450 hp Shelby block engine using a Scat 3.98" cast crank, Eagle rods, off the shelf Probe or Ross pistons, Edelbrock heads and intake, Erson Rocker assys, with either a hydraulic or flat tappet cam, etc. for $15,000 to $17,000, depending on options. The engine would be safe and reliable to 6000 to 6200 rpm and make an easy 450 hp, depending on cam selection and head work. HTH, Mike |
I also think that the 30k is way out of line. I build 500HP 427's at least one per month, and also lots of 428's and milder 427's as well - I could retire real early if I got that kind of money! Using a Ford block the 500HP 427 costs about 11k to 13k depending on options. A shelby block should only add $2500 to $3000 because you already have money in there for the Ford block. I could build one for 15k to 17k just like SKfiredog said.

Roller cams, Velasco cranks, Aviaid dry sumps, Carb Shop carbs, T&D Rockers, $700 aluminum valve covers, Crower rods, - these are the kind of things that make it even more expensive.......
Sure you do NOT need them for a street engine - but then again you don't need a Cobra to get around either - :) Mike is on the money at the mid teens ......... |

factory 2X4 intake avaid pan, Bj & BK holly carbs, Harland sharp roller rocker assy with billett stands, aires pistons, edelbrock heads with flow work done bieng buit by Gessford machine. You should contact George Anderson will be happy to talk $$ :) |
