Oil out of the sidepipes and bellhousing?
Recently took delivery of a beautiful, new Cobra with a a 427 center oiler.
It is leaking oil OR tranny fluid from the bellhousing and what looks like the rear gearbox. It is leaking enough that my driveway and garage are pretty well stained and wherever I go it leaves a mark. My question is; Should I expect some fluid loss in a car like this or is even a little unacceptable? Also, the pipes are spitting out oil..., is this normal for a high performance big block?? My limited experience says no. P.S. The Tranny is a David Kee and the engine was built by a pretty reputable, 3rd party builder. |
Sorry to hear that. I'm afraid your piston rings are not sealing and oil is going out the exhaust. With that kind of blowby the engine will push oil out of anywhere it can, including the rear main seal or back of intake manifold and run out onto ground. Someone did not break in the motor properly or really abused it.

Oil out the bellhousing is usually the rear main seal on the crankshaft. Replacing it might help, but doesn't always. You should be able to determine if it is oil or tranny fuid, as they are significantly different in feel as you rub your fingertips together. The truth is, more cobras leak a little, than none at all. Some hemmorage oil out every possible place, they are called FE's.
When you say "rear gearbox" do you mean the differential? Most have a breather that can allow some oil to vent out, normal to run a length of hose from the breather up and loop it over, it will prevent most blowoutof gear oil. You need to determine where the fluids are leaking from before trying to fix any of the leaks, the best way is with flouro dye and a strong blacklight. You may be surprised what is leaking and where it is leaking from. |

For the length of hose from the rearend vent ..... just loop it into a coil and strap it against the rearend? So it might maintain a small amount of oil in the bottom loop ..... correct? Thanks, |

Oil consumption
In this day and age with ring technology and tighter piston to wall clearances along with head and valve technology, my 427 used very little oil and that was at the track under extreme circumstance.

Some folks mistake condensation in the side pipes as oil!, mine spits out a little
after sitting all night, just like my bronco and jeep. As for FE's hemmoraging oil, it sure will if you or whoever didn't bolt it up correctly..... |

If you have a David Kee transmission, I assume you have a hydraulic clutch. Check your lines to the throwout bearing. I had the same problem a few months back. Good Luck....... Ron. |

You know it could be as simple as a Positive Crankcase Ventilation valve, a PCV. In other words there MUST be someway to relieve the internal pressure in the motor or oil WILL be forced out. Road Draft tube (as in the 40's and 50's) valve cover vents, SOMETHING!
All though, oil out the side pipes sounds very bad indeed and probably NOT something a PCV valve would address. Engine oil leak? Yeah, PCV will help there! Ernie |

I have a 460 and I notice a little puddle overnight...every night. The oil pan is clean but the bottom of the bellhousing is where the leak is coming from. It is definately engine oil. Should I powerwash the oil off the bellhousing and put flourescent dye in the oil? Can gunking and hosing down the bottom of the engine and tranny hurt anything? If this is the rear seal, can this be repaired with the engine in the car or will the engine have raised or removed.
