Cam lift and duration
Not knowing alot about cam shaft profiles, I was wondering, is a cam with 640/654 lift, 254/260 dur @ 50,114 lobe seperation, too hot for a street car.
I ask because I am about to buy a 427 TO with this cam. I hope the numbers make complete sense because I just copied them down the way they were presented to me. Paul |
That is alot of duration for the street and I don't like the 114 centerline. That would be a great camshaft for a 4 speed race car that spends its time in the 5500-7500 rpm range. It won't be happy in the 2000-5000 rpm range you will drive at most of the time. It will actually be a weak runner unless you abuse it.
But it will sure sound cool as hell !!! |

Pretty mild cam. should have a slight lope. all done by probably 6000. Nice streetable cam.

Interesting question. But to determine cam size / profile best suited to any application more questions need to be answered.
1. Calculated Compression 2. Manifold type 3. Head Flow Numbers 4. Final Gear Ratio 5. Car Weight 6. Tire Diameter 7. Carb. Size 8. Rod Length 9. Greatest % of Intended Driving Purpose: Street, Drag,Road Race, or ? As it pertains to the cam you wrote about. Some general comments & questions. 1. Is this a solid or a solid roller? 2. Duration @ .200 lift? 3. If a solid profile: should run a 427 CID engine to 6500 RPM. 4. Rough Idle 5. Needs at least 10.5:1 Calculated Compression 6. 114 LDA works well with FE rod length 7. Install the cam 5 to 7 degrees advanced. ( Given the intake is ground centered at 110 to 112) 7. Overall: Wide power band with peak HP 6200 to 6500. 8. Idle: 850 Roller, 1050 solid. 9. Needs stout springs 10. A Closer LDA would give you more peak torque @ the sacrifice of lower CCC, idle vacuum, & peak HP. Good Luck on your engine. |

I'm running a 351-W with an Edlebrock RPM Performer intake and Holley 600 cfm. carb, Iron heads,69 model,polished ported,gasket matched,bowls blended,1.90/1.60 valves,guides plates,full roller rocker arms. My cam is very close to yours in specs. Back in 1996 when I built this motor, Ford made the crate engine in 350hp and 385 hp,they have since dropped the 350 hp engine. I built mine using the specs for the crate 350hp engine,using the cam they recommended. The part number is 443941,Crane Cam,specs are as follows; At .050,with 1.6 rocker arms; intake lift at cam---.3027--total .484 exhaust at cam----.3200--total .512 duration intake is .216 at .050----or .272 at 0 duration exhaust is .228 at .050---or .284 at 0 lobe center is 107 intake and 117 exhaust. This cam idles very smooth at 750 to 800 rpms,no lope,pulls like a frieght train thru 6000rpms. I have a little over 17,000 miles on the engine and love it,a joy to drive in town in stop and go city traffic,but when needed if you step on it it will go.... I run 12.90s at the drag strip with a Tremec and 3.00 rear gear,that's in a 3300lb. Mustang. Gets good gas mileage and doesn't over heat,can sit and idle for 45 minutes at 180 degrees in 100 degree heat if needed,done soo in parades... As you can see your cam has a little more lift and duration,but very close to mine,should be very "streetable" and fun to drive,not too wild and should love low rpms and city driving....and still run like hell if needed.... Misfit, I have a single Holley 4150 that has been reworked by Willy's Carb Shop . The camshaft I have is .605 lift on 110 centerline with 294 adv. duration, 248 @ .050. The ramp is mild and it doesn't require alot of spring pressure (125lbs. closed and 315 open) It has a rough idle but it is comfortable at 700-800 rpm. The first cam I put in this motor was .650 lift and 255/262 @ .050 on 112 centerline. I HATED IT. It was a dog until 5000 rpm. Not the street manors I was looking for. Opinions vary. Someone else may have this cam and love it in a street car.
