Oil-pressure relief vavle

I have a '63 427 center oiler C3AE that I am putting together. All the machine work was supposedly done by Eagle Racing in Southern Michigan when I bought the block and all the parts. So far everything is at spec according to Steve Christ's book on Fe big blocks.

My question is about the oil-pressure relief valve found in the rear oil gallery immediately above the cam shaft. I pulled the gallery plug to check if the valved had been shimmed to increase oil pressure and NO valve to be found. Do I need the valve or can it be left out, since I have the high volume oil pump from Precision Oil Pumps which already has a pressure relief valve installed ? The valve in the pump has had the spacer install to increase oil pressure. I may remove it if the pressure is too high.

Any comments are welcome

Thanks
Paul

I forgot to mention that the gallery plug that I pulled out was quite a ways into the gallery. By that I mean, it was in past where the main gallery and the cam gallery are connected by the small vertical gallery, effectively plugging the short oil pressure relief gallery. I hope this makes sense as it is hard to explain in words.

Contact George Anderson @ Gessford

I don't know the answer but sounds pretty fishy to me. Definitely something you want to get sorted our for sure before firing it up.

Contact George at Gessford, he will know what to do and also has the valve and spring (I think you need it).

IIRC if the plug is not located properly the oil pressure from the main gallery will just dump back into the pan. Or, you could block off oil supply to the rear main bearing. Both things are not good.
I just install the valve and shim up the spring to keep it closed. The bypass in the pump will do the job.

I second the suggestion in calling George Anderson at Gessford. He really knows his stuff! By the way, I have a pressure relief valve in my 427 SO set at - I believe 100 psi - I think. Like the previous post mentioned I am sure the bypass in the pump will work just fine. Best of luck!

It may have been plugged internally. That is not uncommon. You need to know whether it was or wasn't. If so fine. You may elect to leave it that way.

The oil pump has a similar system to regulate pressure. If it hasn't been plugged it was accidently left out and it was a good save. You would have had very low oil pressure in the system if it was run without the valve.

SOBRAC,

What kind oil pressure do you see at idle?
