THe older guy is really a character, I'm thinking that he still thinks the Civil WAr is raging in Georgia... I can call him 10 times a day with questions and he's never acted put out. Takes time to explain his ideas and why they will work.
I'll bet he still tunes engines by ear. Has alot of Boss 429 stuff, actually a sh** load of every kind of Ford Big block stuff. He's kind of like your GrandPa.. You just knew he knew what he was talking about. THe local guy has an excellent rep on Ford stuff too. He has all the toys at his disposal. Dyno Etc Etc... I will say the local guy says I don't need forged pistons, MY CR should be 10-1 or lower, Stock rockers, smaller carb. Ha Ha Ha when I mentioned to my Granpa that the local guy suggested a Quadrajet he went nuts.. G** D** Chevy sh**.. The old guy Is really giving me break on parts. I asked up here at a TRans shop about going over a C-6 and they told me 1500. THe old guy says( I've learned all the tricks with these C-6's and I'll build ya a good one for 400 exchange...) So thats my quandry.. Oh and to add more drama one of my best friends who knows Ford engines too but over thinks everything. is friends with the local engine guy.. HOL* SH** .. |

A few opinions - like you need more.
Having read all you said about your two main advice givers, I'd lean towards the old guy. I think he nailed it when he said your local engine guy is a chevy guy, I wouldn't use a quadrajet or an edelbrock.
I'd be looking for a new machine shop if it was me. One that is more interested in doing what you tell them to do and doing it right. I wouldn't get all hung up on compression ratio. (given the same cam) a half a point only drops your hp by 4%. Start at 10:1 and go big on the cam. Headers will make much more difference than that little 1 point of compression (to power) but it will certainly help you prevent detonantion. That gives you the flexibility to curve your distributor and run more advance. Desktop dyno is pretty much useless unless you have flow numbers for your heads. I'm also pretty unimpressed by the infulence of choices of intakes. But other than that it's a tool, much better than nothing but not near perfect. In the end listen to people a little, do a little research and give something a try. |

You are correct....Performance parts manufacturers do use computer simulation programs to suggest products.(or what they have too many of on the shelf at that time) But I bet their program was not purchased at Super Walmart for $19.95. I have desktop dyno and I enjoy tinkering with it alot. All I meant in my post was not to spend alot of money on the parts it suggests but rather speak to a reputable FORD guy in your area. Brent |

Here's where I got the cam info for the comp cams: http://www.smokemup.com/utils/cams_results.php Which of those cams would you like me to try? I can often get just what I need from the cam mfs catalog but the comp cams catalog doesn't give me what I need like many of the other cam mfr's catalogsn (or I can't find it - I need the valve opening and closing timing). BB427 - $19.95 at Super Walmart? I got ripped off. I had to pay $39.95 at Summit. :) Chris |

Even if you paid full retail for Desktop Dyno 2000, you saved literally thou$and$ in parts and time determining what works best on your motor, and what has little effect.
Well worth every penny. Use it before you spend a dime on parts. |

I had 11.5 compression on my 427 with iron heads. The engine blew the headgasket twice and needed important engine repair . Now I have aluminum heads (Dove F5) with 9.5 compression.
The better flow and cooler running of the aluminum heads more than makes up the horsepower lost to compression. Engine is more dependable now, runs cool and has great torque , which is what makes driving fun , especially if you prefer windy mountain roads to straight highways. Dont get mislead by all the goodies they want to sell you. In the 400-500 HP range you will hardly notice a 35 hp difference unless you race with your car. |
