What is "Algon" fuel injection ?

I came across a fuel injection system made by "Algon" (stacked tubes) for FE's Does anyone know of the company or builder & how well it works ect...?

Nice looking system. They used to be one of the big injection mfg.s during the '60's ( and probably earlier), I don't think they are or have been made for quite a while. Like most continuous flow systems they weren't very streetable, but there is a company that converts early systems to electronics.

builder was Al Gonzales (ALGON). Once had a shop in Richmond CA. I'm sure he is long gone by now.

Yes, Al passed away, not too long ago actually. A little over a year ago at the age of 80.

I checked with a custom builder & he said that it would still cost apx. 4 k to convert it electronic & may be better to go with webbers. With this system I was trying to find out if I could go a cheaper way than spending 5-7 k with a webber or similure induction. :(

In theory, all it would need is injector bungs and rails, and a TPiS to ready the manifold for EFI. Then add the controller.

Algon fuel injection is a mechanical injection system which uses different injectors and no electronic controls.

To convert the auctioned system, you would need to get the manifold machined to accept electronically-controlled injectors. You would also need some means of pulling an average vacuum reading from each of the individual ports as they don't share a common manifold. This would mean fabricating some mini-manifold and plumbing to each of the areas under the throttle plates. At this late stage, you also would probably have to rebuild or refresh the throttle plates and mechanisms.

In addition to the machining for the injectors, and the fabrication for the vacuum accumulator, you would also need to work out some means of mounting other assorted sensors, like a TPS and coolant sensor. None of this is particularly rocket science, but it will add up.

AND, I've seen Algon manifolds go for $400. This auction is for a complete system, but if you're only interested in the manifold for conversion purposes, then you'd be buying a lot more 'stuff' than you really need. It's ultimately up to you though.

Yes, it is on ebay & I would not pay that much for what he has. I emailed he saying if he does not happen to sell it at auction, I would offer less. Like you say, it would need some time & money to modify to electronic. It would be fun to convert but, I'de rather someday, find a webber/ like....system.

Algon also made a set up with the stacks angled inward about 45 degrees, instead of straight up as you have pictured. I think the angled version would be better for a cobra, unless you want the stacks sticking straight up through the hood, like an AFX racer.

I think the throttle bores are 1 7/8", about 48mm. But, with only a throttle plate, and no venturi, they will flow better, about equal to 52mm webers.

I know there are different EFI set ups, some needing more sensory input than others, so I don't know if you really need a vacuum input. You would need to talk to Kinsler Fuel injection, as they make hilborn type FI systems into efi, and will take an algon, hilborn, jackson, or one of their own intakes and set it up for EFI, with filters as well.
