Chiperd WHERE YOUR DIPSTICK:confused: Start with 6 quarts if you have a oil cooler and standard full filter and check the stick. Rick Lake

No oil cooler: Dip stick broken-need to get a new one but want to pick yp the oil at the same time. c

Chiperd go with 5.5 quarts of oil It will not hurt anything if it's a little too high. Better to have more than not enough Rick Lake

Chiperb,
Rick is correct. I think the stock pans held either 4 1/2 or 5 quarts and then you figure in about a quart for the filter if you are running the standard length filter. Put the 5.5 quarts in and run the motor for a few minutes watching your oil pressure and then shut it off and take a look at where the level is. Ron |
Thanks for the info: What weight oil? Should I use Mobil1? See post bellow: oil pressure dropped fm normal 40 to 32 on a trip. Was hot. Fired it up last night and was back to 40lbs at idle after it had cooled down. cb

Good question. Do you also take into account the extra oil lines for the external oil filter, then to the oil cooler in front then back to the engine. When the engine is running and oil pumping, just how much has to be left in the engine. Yeah I know enough for the pump to keep sucking it up, but how much more? As I'm getting older, I think I'm becoming a bit paranoid now, so I check it as soon as I turn it off, thinking it hasn't had a chance to drain back in and I'm getting a closer reading of whats in the pan.
What weight oil are you guys running in your FE's. Multi-grade or just a one weighted? Also, if anyone is running a 20-50, and a high volume pump, what is your oil pressure? Thanks, Bob Faust |
