engine question
ok, sorry for sounding ignorant, but on a big block ford, what is the difference exactly between a regular say 427 and a side oiler version?? and what is better? why? thanks for help....

Block question
The side oiler block that everyone thinks they have to have oils the mains and rods first and then the oil goes to the camshaft and top end. The center oiler block is like a small block chevy in that the oil travels a center galley above the camshaft in the valley. The oil goes down this galley and feeds down and around the cam journal, oiling the camshaft on the way down to the mains and rods. These blocks work great and I would take all of the good ones I could get. We install roller cam bearings in some of these blocks and this blocks the oil of to the camshaft and we make the groove around the camshaft bigger and it oils as good as a side oiler. We have made over 750HP with these blocks with no problems and that is more than most of these guys will make for there cobras. Hope this helps, Keith Craft

Also price is an issue. The sideoiler is more expensive than the topoiler or "centeroiler" as it's known because of its demand in the market today as it the motor of choice for the cobra. You see NOS sideoiler blocks going for over 7k on e-bay. Also its getting harder to find a good sideoiler as many claim it will need sleeves in the cyls after a .30 overbore because of its thinwall casting. And many have been blown up over the years and repaired and sleeved. People are passing off marine blocks as sideoilers also because they were cast from the same mold but were drilled as top or centeroilers so be carefull. There is nothing wrong with a good marine block if it's has no saltwater use in its life. The centeroiler is excellent and will make a great motor also. Really any 427 will make a great engine just be very carefull what you buy. G.

In the end there's no real performance difference in the blocks as Keith mentioned....
