I have a good friend who has done this a few times,,396 in a shelby block,and a 396 street motor,he is a 427 guru and said it is a fun motor and good at super high revs,but in the end you lose torque which is what an fe is all about ,and keeping the top end together isnt worth the effort,he did say it is a good sprint , open wheel ,or all out light weight drag car motor,but not for the street,,works well with constant high rpm applications,,Tk

Interesting exercise.
Racing cars need this kind of engine - as has been said by others. For the street I like an engine that can idle past with the rear tires smoking.....a torque monster. Revs cost big money - not just in initial outlay but in maintenance. Remember the old saying "there is no substitute for cubic inches". In racing, of course, there is no substitute for cubic dollars. All this talk about running at high rpm's just begs the question: why not destroke a cammer?
A destroked cammer wouldn't have the spring problems an in-block cam FE would have. I WOULD ditch the cammer's timing chain in favor of an external belt drive conversion. Or, you could convert a set of tunnelports (or heads of your choice) to overhead cam drive (actually not all that hard, about the cost of a T&D setup), running bucket tappets instead of rockers, doing away with another layer of potential failure at high rpm. Think you could spin something like that over 10K? Regularly? |
Pretty interesting engine-combos guys. I just love high-winding motors. There's no sound more pleasing. Sometimes when I destroke my wet-noodle, puss comes out, followed by a Top Ramen surprise! - Just had to add my 2 cents, but worth a penny everytime!
