What is the maximum safe bore size for a 428? I have found a 428 block that is already .30 over. Is is safe to go .40?

My first 428 was bored .060 and I had nothing but problems with it. Granted it was poorly built but from day one it ran hot. I think at .040 you will have to go to Keith Black Hyperutetic Pistons.
I have a friend here in Tulsa that still has a couple std bore 428 blocks as well as many other FE parts. Former racer wrench. I think he will sell one of his blocks for between $300 and $400. He also guarantees them to pass inspection. They will need to go through normal machine shop rebuild. His name is Fred Webb and he can be reached at 918-266-5245. Clois |
It will vary from block to block, so a sonic map is the only way to go.

Howdy,
I run a 428-4V that was bored .060"os (4.19") for several years w/out any problems. Usually when you have an overheating problems it is radiator/fan & shroud related. I had a "71 Dodge Charger R/T w/ a 440 Mag. that was bored .060"os and it had a overheating problem. After bout 6 mnths the rad started leaking. I replaced it w/ a reman radiator and different fan & shroud and it stopped overheating. :p |

tt400 What is the bore on the motor Now?? You can get custom pistons made.5, 10,15, 17, 30, 35, over size. Ask the FE builders what the save size is. Sonic test the block can't see cracks in the walls. You could put 8 sleaves in the motor. I have heard people doing this. Have heard good and bad problems. FE motor parts are not cheap and the old stuff is getting harder to find. Call Clois freind, buy the block, have yours sleaved and you have a spare. I have a 428 spare motor in the shed all wrapped up for a rainy day. Rick Lake

.040 is about all we reccommend. Past that you subject the block to stress and temp related problems. We,ve seen them all over the place on overbore though. We put sleeves in for $100.00 ea. or we can provide you with a brand new still in Cosmoline 428 Block for $1995. Keith Craft Motorsports. 972-578-3550

DSC motorsports sells the same 428 blocks new for $800. He has 6 of them.
