How to ID 428 PI or CJ

Okay, so I think I'm ready to take the first part of the Cobra plunge and start building an engine. I've pretty much decided on a 428, but haven't made any build decisions. (I like the sound & torque of the BB, but don't want to shell out the big bucks for a 427 side-oiler. From what I understand, most of the originals came with the 428 anyway).

First order on the agenda: How do I identify a 428 as either a Police Interceptor or Cobra Jet? The original Cobras used either one of these, right?

I'd also be interested in build suggestions, heads, cam, pistons, cross-bolting the main bearings, et cetera. Externally, I'm thinking of a more original look, but internally all bets are off! I'd like to get the most power out of the 428 as possible without sacrificing the original "look".

Oh, and by the way, I don't want to hear ANY MORE of the grotesquely factionalized BB vs. SB discussion. If you're not here to talk about the FE, then move along, lil' buddy!

Cheers,
Doug:rolleyes:

Well since most of the 428 blocks carry a C6AE-.....casting number you can ID by date code. Also PI and CJ blocks have the triple webbing on the crank saddles. Heads and intake, carb, crank, rods etc... can be ID by casting numbers. The 428 cobrajet registry has an excellent section on parts ID with photos and casting numbers. www.428cobrajet.org Take a look. Hope the link is correct. Glenn.
