Found 427? Engine

I just registered to post this message. This weekend I came across a early 70's SK type boat for sale with what I was told is supposed to be a correct 1966 427 side oiler engine. The seller told me the engine code is C6ME which thru some research here I think may actually be a 428 block. It is supposed to have matching heads and a correctly dated dual plane aluminum manifold with Carter carbs. I looked at it quickly but couldn't hang around to verify numbers etc. The boat has only been ran in fresh water and is currently in good running condition. If anyone is interested email me at reddogeb@yahoo.com and I will take a closer look. From what I have seen here so far, the price he is asking might justify buying the boat for the engine. I don't have a need for it (I lean towards Chevy myself) but thought someone might. Patrick

For those that have ask I am located in southern Idaho. Thanks to the emails I have received I now have enough information to revisit the boat and confirm what is there. I am also going to hear it run to try and determine its condition and take photos. There have been questions about price, I will have to buy the complete boat for the engine and need to find out what the hull, V drive, etc is worth. Also, if anyone is interested in the whole package let me know.

BTW, in my browsing of this site, you guys are running a class act, similar to the Chevelle site I hang around (www.chevelles.com if you are interested).

C6ME is a 428 ,,,Tk

427?? Don't think so!

According to my book, C6ME could be a 360, 390, 410, 428, AND various truck engines. Sorry, but no 427 listed for C6ME. KEep your money in your pocket. Really, the only visual clue would be to look in one of the center freeze plug holes for the correct engine size stamp...and then I am not sure they did that for the 427. Other clues might be the cross bolts and so on. As for the freeze plug test, my guess is he won't let you do that.:3DSMILE:

UPDATE: With the info gained here I went back. No main bearing side bolt so its not a 427 SO. I pulled an inmpression of the code under the #1 cylinder and it is either C6ME or C8ME both of which show up a number of engines. Assuming the guy has his time frame right it could be a 66-70 428, but if not, that code could be for any number of engines. It has 40 hours on it and the tach redline is set at 4800. The heads are cast C8?E which is a 1968 date code. They also have a casting of N0808 in the same place as the C8?E. The manifold is an Offenhauser dual plane with Carter carbs.

Bottom line is he wants $5700 for the boat and I haven't had any good response from boat guys for the Jenkins V Drive of Nicson exhaust and front drive unit. If the motor is worth that to anyone LMK and I will pursue it further and see if he will lower the price.

It does sound like a 428 engine. The N heads are 68/70 CJ/SCJ. The C6ME or C8ME both come up 428 also. Sounds like a cool boat though! G.

Yeah, but...

Sure, sounds like a cool boat, but who wants to pay that much for a 428 block? Now if it were a 427, its a deal!

Howdy Bomelia,

I like your little quote at the bottom of your post.:D

Reminds me of the dog fights I saw in a Far East country (can't say which one, it has been 20 years yet). Anyway, at the food court you had a choice between eating the winner or the loster of the fight!

Thankyou!

Glad you like it! Wish I could take credit but I cannot. Sad, but I cannot remeber who said it.

Mike
