Favorite V'cover Gaskets
What's your preference for LEAKPROOF valve cover gask's and/or adhesive/sealants? Cork, Neoprene, or ??? sealants. This assumes a well matched intake to cylinder head mate.

I used Fel-Pro Rubber Gasket on my M/T Valve covers. Not one leak.

Here's the secret to leak proof valve cover gaskets. (Oil pan gaskets too)
Obviously, the valve cover gasket surface has to be flat. Indents where the bolts go through must first be flattened. When using stamped steel valve covers, use the little metal ears under the bolts to spread the load out. On the valve cover side (and it doesn't make any difference if you use rubber or cork), I use hardware store Weldwood/DAP contact adhesive. Spread on valve cover, and gasket top. Let dry until tack free, then join surfaces. On the bottom of the gasket, I use plain old wheel bearing grease, liberally applied. It seals great, and comes apart for maintenance without destroying the gasket. The gasket is re-usable. Oil does not dissolve the grease when used as a sealant. Have been using this technique for years on valve covers, oil pans, and carburetors. |

Yes the grease releases just fine after being heated, and doesn't dissolve with the oil. Just the grease without the contact adhesive works on vacuum sealing carb gaskets to intake manifolds, and metering block gaskets to throttle bodies. Actually this tip originated from HO Racing Specialties in the early '70's when I was tweaking Pontiacs. Works just as well today as it did then. |
I like the rubber ones because I can remove the covers for adjusting valve lash and re-use the gaskets which I've done about 4 times now with the same rubber, trick is to silicone them to the covers but not the head. Haven't had them leak yet.

I have had sucess using studs Vs. bolts.
They help hold the gaskets in place during installation of the covers. You also eliminate the turning effect of the bolts to distort the gasket. Same principle as is used when using studs when installing heads. Bud |
What about the Valve covers ?
How about covers them selfs, not alot of choices for FE motors. Summit has only one set with baffles and tall enough to be used with a high lift cam. Who sells them ?:JEKYLHYDE

You can try Shelby, Holman&Moody, Tony Branda, Cobra Restorers and Moon Equipment , to name a few. Possibly Blue Thunder also but I'm not sure. Good luck. |
With all the other additions and upgrades to FE's, I'm surprised
there are no solid rubber VC gaskets available, I guess?. |
