Do Pent-Roof Valve Covers Come With Badges?
If you order the valve covers (say from the Finish Line), do they come with the 427 badges, or do you have to order them separately and stick 'em on there?

Both are sold seperatly, I believe the badges are still a Ford item while the cover is reproduced. Tout

They are both repop's.....the badges are front fender badges . Yoiu will need to snap off the mounting studs ,and epoxy them to the covers your self. its really pretty easy , use the special trim epoxy......comes in little glass bottles that crush at one end.... you carefully put the catalyst on the cover , then crush the other and put it on the badge ...imediatly assemble .........sticks like hell....wont vibrate off. You can also use high temp RTV sealant and they wont come off. In my opion Tony Branda is one vendor that still has the original badges. They are a little better than some suppliers.

Here is my advice on the application of the badges. Both the back of the badge as well as the surface of the pent-roof cover need to be real clean for any epoxy to adhere over the long haul. I would suggest a clean rag wetted with acetone. Acetone is a super cleaner and leaves no residue. Second choice would be brake cleaner fluid if you do not have Acetone. Be aware that acetone is a very very flamable fluid so it is not advisable to leave that rag crumpled up, let it air dry outdoors after you are done.
Now, for the epoxy... there is a super epoxy that is two part, and a paste called PC7. One part is black and the other is grey. You mix these in equal parts. Because it is a paste or putty, you can easily put 5 dabs on the back of the emblem and the emblem will kind of "bed" to the top of the pent-roof. Benefit is not spill or drip, and permanent. PC7 is super strong, rubbing alcohol is the solvent if you need it. It cures fully in 24 hours and is drillable, tapable, sandable, polishes, molds, inpervious to oil, does excellent in thermo expansion/contraction, water, etc. This is amazing stuff. Shelf life is very, very long when puchased in the tin cans. It comes also in smaller plastic tubs. You may have seen this stuff in good hardware stores. The display is ususally a Coke bottle with all sorts of things attached to it. It works. The emblems on my ERA's Pentroof have been there for 10+ years now. The nagging question about the badges on the pent-roof covers it the so called "Correct" position. I have seen both in front as well as one in front and one in the rear location (side to side) on original 427 photos. I have also seen both in the rear as well. It appears there was no "rule" or standard for badge placement based on those observations. Does anyone have the "definative" answer to placement? Cheers |
I thought a knowledgeable someone here at CC posted that the originals did not come with the pentroof covers, that they were add-ons by the owners...is this correct?

Don't need no stinking badges!!!
To my knowledge, the original pentroof covers did not come with badges, and contemporary photos taken of the engine bays seem to support this.
As for placement, I have seen some placed at the front of both covers, and some placed on the front on one and back on the other. That method at least makes the covers truly interchangeable from side to side. Mine are in the latter position. BTW, JB Weld works great, also Bud:JEKYLHYDE :JEKYLHYDE :JEKYLHYDE |
Interesting Trivia...
Nov 1965 SCG shows nude pentroof covers, no badges Nov 1965 Car & Driver shows nude pentroof covers, no badges January 1967 pic in Popular Hot Rodding shows nude pentroof covers, no badges. Nov 1967 in Motor magazine shows badges in rear of both covers ...the rest of the original "at that time" articles I have show cast alum "Cobra 427" covers Old Car Illustrated, March 1979 shows CSX3039 with two badges, both in front. Hot Rod, June 1977, shows CSX3052, two badges, both up front. Ned's CSX3042 ( the SAAC concours "plum") has two badges, both up front. ...and at least 6 of the original Comp Cars that I have early pics of all have no badges. Thumbing thru the ranks of early or unmolested (relatively) street car pics.. most seem to have two badges, both up front. What does this all mean? ... I guess, do what ya like! :D ,,,but it looks like no badges... or both up front is more authentic. |
