FE AA Cam
All:
I've been talking with misfit41 about the right cam for my 427ci FE. Comp cams advised me that I should use one of their custom grinds...but misfit is really bragging on the Ford AA cam...now made by Lunati and Crane. How many of you guys are using this cam? By the looks of the specs, it doesn't appear that it would have that good deep rough idle/lope that a longer duration/tighter lobe separation cam would have.... Would someone with this cam care to comment or put in their $.02? |
Confusion
Let me further confuse you with another choice. Several of us 427 FE guys are using a Crower cam and like it very much. There are two good choice from them. :3DSMILE:

I have a 294S/.605 lift/solid from Comp Cams and I am very pleased with it. Idles @800 has a mild ramp so it is easy on valvetrain components. It sounds and performs great.

That's the setup I was going with...I guess you're in my boat...I'm starting out with a 390 block. Having it sonic tested right now to see how much I can bore it.
What RPM range are you running in? You getting most of the power in the 6000-6500 range? Or are you stretching it a little further? Thanks for the help. :-) |
It will go 6500 with no problem. It is a great combination for the money. Revs like a small block, sounds like a big block.

What about the HM cams in the 04 FMS catalog? They have the AA and B and a boat load of other FE cams. Are these truly a Holman Moody part made by them or are they from an aftermarket cam manufacter? anyone know....?

My conversations with Holman Moody indicates they still grind their own cams. That AA grind that was mentioned is also available for a Y Block by HM.

I was commenting to Brent on how much I liked the old AA grind and was tempted to use it in the 427 I am building,but I do like the 294 comp I am running now,although I would like more low end power and less on the high side,if I were building a 390 though,,not sure I could talk my self out of the AA,it seems those motors were the strongest pulling I have felt,but then again that was 20+ years ago with loads of compression with not too many choices,,I know there are lots of good grinds out there,Tk

I run the AA in my 427, and it pulls like a locomotive, winds to 6500 and would effortlessly go further.. mild lump at 800 idle....I believe it is "the " 427 cam. KK |
