What mods do you have to do....

To run a solid lifter cam in a 390 FE hydraulic cam block? Which holes do you have to plug up?

FFR428 11-24-2003 05:26 PM

Tha basic concept is to plug the short oil galleries that leads to the center gallery. You remove the cup plugs and drill and tap the oil passage and use a allen head plug to block it. If you have Steve Christ's book he goes into some detail with pics. Some feel this is not needed but seems the majority of FE guy's(myself also) plug them. G.

Stupid question.

Why would you want to use a solid lifter cam, instead of a hydraulic roller cam?

Just thought I'd ask.

Jack21,hydralic roller cams are sweet in FE's,but are substantially more expensive than solid lifter or flat tappet hydralic cams.

I don't really mind being told my question is stupid....but anyway....

Like Gary said, a hydraulic roller cam is pushing $300 just by itself...not to mention another $300 for the roller lifters...plus the fact that a lot of people have stated that FE blocks are not the best for lubrication with a roller cam. I don't see much of a horsepower advantage vs money....and the only other plus side of a roller cam is not having to "break" the cam in for a period of time on startup.

On the flip side, you can buy a cam and lifter set for $199.99...and if you go with a solid lifter, you get good performance plus all the cool chatter.

I hope that answers my "stupid question."

I think Jack was saying that "His" question was Stupid, not your's.

Oh.....hehehe....sorry Jack. My apologies. :o
