Need your opinions/advice

I currently have two options:

1. 428CJ that is currently in a car and running. It was rebuilt approx. 10k miles ago. It is 30 over with KB pistons, very mild cam, PI intake, stock pan, crank was turned, port and polished heads, and flywheel. No carb. Price $3k

2. An industrial 427 top oiler, machined .030 over w/ KB pistons, very mild cam, stock oil pan, heads port and polished, crank turned, all new bolts, new stock water pump, stock intake, hp oil pump. This block was machined and built 9 yrs ago, but never fired and hand turned once a month. Receipts verify all machine work, labor and parts. No carb Price $6k.

This will be going in a Unique 427 with a toploader. No racing is planned in its future.

What would you choose and why? Or why wouldn't you choose either?

Buy the 428 for 3k - the center oild is already .30 over and should not be bored further- how is it that the 428 is runing with out a carb?

I would go with the 427. It still seems like the more proper motor in a cobra and will always make the desireability of the car more as well as higher resale value.Besides you never have to dance around the question"does it have a 427" chuck

ERA649, The 427 was machined .030 over, but never run. The 428 is .030 over 10k miles ago. The 428 is currently in a car, but he is keeping the carb when he sells the engine.

Chuck, that is a good point.

Both motors are good and I have had BOTH in my car.
Started with the 428PI and switched to a 427SO when I had the parts together. The 427 used the same intake, carb , C.R., and exhaust of the 428 , but different cam and heads ( Dove ). In my case the 427 felt MUCH stronger than the 428. Heads/cam makes a difference.
ENTDOC is correct however, you grow weary of people asking is "that a real 427 motor"?. ( after driving my car for 20 years, I have heard it all )
Thus I would go with the 427, if funds allow. Good luck

If you have no plans to race it I would stay with the motor that is more stock, you'll have alot less headaches.

427's are always worth 2-3x what the 428 will be. Plus (not that you should lie) but they are identical to the 427 SO visually.

Chances are the 427 was made using a stronger alloy as well as it having the main cap cross bolting.

SCOBRAC 12-26-2003 08:03 PM

BTW... 100 427 cars came with 428's. (more than came with 427's in 66/67) So either would be "correct". It still isn't worth the explanation one needs to give the masses.
