FE Carburation and jetting
I finished pulling my 2 X 4 carbs & manifold off last night and set a single Holley 4 bbl Ford Cobra alum manifold. I can't find my notes from the last time I ran a single 4bbl so I was wondering if you guys could tell me what your set ups are for a 428 CJ. Cam is 572/235 solid lifter 0.030 over w/ 10.5 : 1 compression.
I have both a 4150 Holley and access to a Demon 750 carb. Last night when I started my engine up I was running so rich I set off my carbon monoxide alarm in my garage (with all the doors open and half my car in the drive). I reset my fuel pressure to 5 lbs and re-adjusted my jets and I made things better but still not great. So I was wondering what fuel pressure you are running and what jets etc. you are running on your set ups. Clois |
Clois, what type of fuel pressure regulator are you running? Aside from rejetting and Power-valve changes, my buddy had the same type of rich-issue after a while on his new engine setup. Turned out his regulator was not regulating properly (leaking) and his air filters were way too restrictive.

Duane.
I am running a Aerometer electric fuel pump and regulator. In fact I have two regulators (I was running split fuel lines on my 2 x 4 setup). I also have two good Holley red fuel pumps I can change over to if i want. I had my air cleaner off during while I was adjusting on my carb and setting my timing. Clois |

Check the Idle circuit out...... You can lean it out by restricting the fuel coming to the Idle circuit. Not a good idea to drill the Air Bleeds..... unless you're ready to drill and tap so you can us jets to control the air bleed.... measure the air bleed (ID) before you do anything. BTW how do you like the Aerometer fuel pumps and regulator.... ? |
Clois, log into this website, click onto the numerical listing link, and look up your carb number...it will tell you what your carb came with stock, try jetting up a notch or two, and set power valve a stage or two lower...just a suggestion.

The fuel pump is very effecient but also VERY NOISEY and the regulators are dead heads and seem to be quite accurate. All the parts are finished in natural aluminium and look good as well.

Clois,
My setup is similar to yours. I installed a new Demon 750 carb and it was so rich initially that I'd nearly pass out. They come from the factory with a 5 inch power valve. My cam was pulling only about 4 inches of vacuum. I swapped out the 5.0 pv for a 3.5 and my rich idle problem immediately went away. Chris |
Clois,,
Just to be curious, why are you going back to a single carb ? Tim |
CLOIS what intake were you using and will it be for sale? thanks

can you guys also tell me why the carb of choice seems to be the 450 and not the 600?

GFUGI,
I was running an Edelbrock 2X4 Aluminium manifold with 2-Edelbrock 600 carbs. If you are interested in the manifold I will sell the manifold alone for $250.00. I also have a brand new Edelbrock 600 manual ck carb I will sell for $100.00. Plus I have two sets of jets and metering rods (cost is $55 ea) I will sell for $50. If you are interested in buy any of this or want to see it let me know by Friday because I am going to Dallas to see Jay and Keith Saturday. Clois 918-633-5336 |
