Valve Seat Recession
Hi,
I've reacently bought a cobra with a 1967 Ford 428ci. I'm assuming this will not work well on straight unleaded Lead Replacement Petrol (Available in UK still) or an additive with normal Ron 95 (95 Octane) unleaded. I guess it would need a higher Octane level than 95 but will it suffer from valve seat recession? Thanks for any help Paul |
Paul - I can't say for sure if your valve seats would be OK for unleaded. Has the engine been rebuilt at some time? I would guess so, and it would have likely received new valve seats at the time, which should be OK.
Untill you get a more definitive answer from the guys here, you could use Millers VSP, which is THE additive to use for engines which need leaded. Also gives an octane boost. Metaline - nice car. Where abouts are you in the UK? Edit: PS - don't bother with LRP - it's useless. |
Hi Wilf,
I'm actually using Castrol Valvemaster plus which is supposed to add 2 Octane as well as protecting the valves. I'ts also supposed to be compatible with LRP RON95 and RON97 (Optimax as well I guess) The engine has been re-built at least twice as far as I know. Once by Metaline in 87 - 89. A second time in 92 when a crane cam was added. I'm actually in Shepshed, which is near Loughborough, near Leicester, In the middle of England, near Europe, On the planet Earth... I guess I'll stop there :D Paul |
Don't worry about valve seat depression, your cobra motor won't be driven enough miles to matter.

Guys,
Please be aware that Octane ratings in the UK and USA differ somewhat and are not directly comparable. Regards, Tony |
How do they figure the octane in the UK?
Here in the US they average the research octane and the mechanical octane. (R+M)/2 |
Paul - small world, Shepshed must be all of 5 miles from my abode in Rothley.
Email me via this forum, (look for the button around this post) we will get together. Also I will put you in touch with the East Midlands Cobra group which meets in Kirby Muxloe - again just down the road from you. A Metaline and a Crendon will add a touch of class to the group meets! Show up all those GDs. Would like to see the car anyway. Still think Millers is better than that Castrol stuff - BHVF did some tests some time ago, Millers came out tops. |
