CJ or not?
Hi guys,
Just bought a block and was told it is a 428cj but all the tell tale signs are not there (that is what I get for trusting my fellow man over the phone). Here is what it does have.... Casting #- c7me-a no "c" or "a" scratched into the back casting Date code- 7J26 on the casting boss flat spot on the passenger side rear there is a stamped C. on the casting boss flat spot on the passenger side front there is a stamped A. on the casting boss flat spot on the drivers sid front above the oil filter boss there is a stamped 7F29V. There are only 2 main web reinforcing ribs. ..that is it, anyone decipher it for me? I only seem to be able to come up with alot of conflicting info. I emailed the seller with my concerns and he contends that it is a CJ block and that I should do my homework. Well, I have been searching the net for awhile now and still have not found that says this is a CJ block. Thanks for any help, Dan |
I am by no means an expert on this, but I do not think it is a CJ block. The code you list, 7J26, translates into October 26, 1967. According to the below website, Ford did not introduce the CJ block until April 1968. Therefore, your block pre-dates the CJ blocks.

Have to agree with above: CJ is a 1968 block at earliest, you should also have 3 reinforced webs and I think CJ blocks were C8me. chuck

It should be a 3 rib support for the CJ. As everyone has said the 67 date code is the giveaway and it's just a regular 428 block. What overbore is it? Hope you did not pay to much for it. Email the guy to check the above 428cj site to see what a REAL CJ block looks like. Sorry to hear you got swindled but the std 428 is an excellent runner none the less. G.

It seems that everyone agrees that it is not a CJ block and you were deceived by the seller. One of the problems, I've seen over the years, is that most guys only know of the 428CJ and not the regular one.Since the CJ was the scourge of many a drag race at the time, when they hear 428 they automatically assume it is a CJ. If you didn't over pay fo it and it is in good shape it will still give good service or get your return to invest in a real CJ. I would contact the guy again, fraud would be a term I could think of and it wouldn't be too hard to prove, but it might be easier and quicker to re-sell and purchase the correct block.
