Best guy for Head Porting!

Can anyone recommend somebody good to port 427 FE heads? This is for a street motor, so I am not looking for high flow at high valve lift. On the contrary, I am looking for maximum flow at low to medium lift. This is much more difficult to do! and who ever does it has to be good! Thanks :o

Keith Craft Racing on the vendor list would be my first choice. G.

how much is it to extrude hone your heads with the intake maniforld

82ACAUTOCRAFT 03-27-2004 10:21 AM

As I said before, Anybody can port a head to make HP at high valve lift! The problem is, as you make the ports bigger you slow down velocity and low end suffers. A good porting (for the street) will maximise flow and velocity at low lift and this requires know how! :(

jschiller 03-27-2004 11:32 AM

I would think a porting decision would depend on the heads being used.

What heads are you going to port?

Some, like the C0E8-N CJ heads need very little work for low lift cams. Edlebrocks seem to work good out of the box with just a touch up.

I currently have Edelbrock heads! Maybe I will get a set of Blue Thunder when they are available!

Southern Automotive did a great job on mine and they definetly know the FE motors....

If money is not too much of an issue, and they will take your job, I would look at Chapman Racing...They are known world wide for their porting...from NASCAR to IRL...

George Anderson at Gessdford Machine would be a wise choice or Keith Craft. Both are in the advertisers list.

Best guy for fe head porting is--

The one you can trust to build what you want and from recommendations from other people---I would recommend Craft because of first hand experience.I had him build my FE stroker based on how much horse power I wanted and he picked the parts/heads/intake etc.(489/871hp@7800)
He made my ports smaller(dove HR ports(filled to MR size)and have see some cj heads he has done for super stock 428 that the intake and exhaust ports are filled(raised). He would probly recommend stage 1 to your heads. So call him and the others that were posted and then make your choice.
Hope this helps,

Hey 82acautocraft,

Keith Craft ported my edelbrock heads (and intake). I opted for his stage II porting with a 622 lift roller cam. my motor is a 482 stroker and makes more power than I can ever reasonably use on the street. He just nailed the combination, from his 500hp motor up to his 800hp motors everybody seems to say the same. I would highly recommend talking with Keith Craft or Drew Baird to work out a combination that will work for you.

Ed Mosier in Fresno CA

I wish I would have followed my advise recently. I thought LA was the place to go for Performance engine work, a couple of friends talked me into going to Mark Jefferies of Tran-Am Racing (Gardina CA). Overalll a bad experience, took forever and costly as well.

You can contact Ed Mosier theough Daves PerformanceMachine (559-441-8322). Ask for Brain Fulton, Brain does all the valve work and head assembly at Daves, he can get you Ed's new number.

Ed worked for Ford Performance division back in the 60's and has been porting heads forever. He will also turn them around fast for you.

Kieth Craft is good as well, but you can not forget about Gearge Anderson if you paln to go out of State, super nice guy.

Don't forget to shave .003 of the head surface to make sure that they are true. Brain Fulton can tell you about this if you call him, I am assuming you are using edlebrocks
