help needed
 
The bolt holding the dampner on the crank is on so tight I cant get it off.Any suggestions?I assume it turns to the left to loosen. thanks;chuck

turn the bolt counter-clockwise to loosen. Whenever I have had this problem, I always use a breaker-bar socket on the dampner bolt, and then insert a metal rod/screw driver through a hole in the flywheel/rear crank face, sometimes on a flywheel bolt, to bind the crank, so I could then apply enough of torque to get the dampner bolt off.

Be sure to set the parking brake, leave it in gear and get a pipe to slip over your breaker bar or 1/2" drive ratchet. 5' of pipe will take 5x less effort than a 1' breaker bar. Hence a bolt with 100 ft pounds of torque will take 20 pounds of effort to remove (or snap off... Be careful)

Ok professional trick. Place a breaker bar on the crank bolt. Turn the engine with the breaker bar till the bar is sitting on the frame. Be SURE that you are turning the engine the way it turns when you start it. Once the bar is on the frame hit the starter and the bolt is now loose.
One other thing to remember DISCONNECT THE IGNITION!!!!

And if you use a breaker bar and pipe instead of the starter trick just suggested, put it in fourth or fifth gear and set the parking brake, to be sure the breaker bar won't turn the motor and move the car instead...

Ken,

If the bolt is real tight bouncing the car will just make the breaker bar fall off. Come on folks I do this 5 days a week. If there was an easier way I would have found it by now. If he can not get a air tool on it the bar trick is the best way to get it off with out hurting himself or the car.

Can you get a swing at the head of the bolt.Some times a shock will get things loose.I work on large heavey Army equipment.and they don't bring the easy ones to us.We call it heavey junk.Once when we were doing a D7G project ,when doing the track frames .We would have the frames removed and upside down on the floor ,rock guards off and tring to get the roller bolts to give 1"x 14 . the bolts were 1- 1/2" whench 10" of pipe and moving the whole frame across the floor.New Guy breaks out an air hammer (like the muffeler shop uses) but with a blunt head. He hammered around the head and down the side along the bolt path and unscrewed it by hand. No oil ,no wrenches, no torches. honest. I'm always open for new ideas.
