The T&D system you have to do head work and can't go back to the shaft system if needed? I want to see this 496 he is building. He said he was 15 motors behind right now.



need4spd You didn't put a cash cap on this build up. What rear ratio are you going with, racing ,cruising, 1/4 mile, or shiner? For a trans, G-Force is the one. 5spd only but 1200hp and 1200tork, clutch or clutchless. They are not cheap but you will not break to trans. It is not an over drive one so a 3.07 rear would be a good choise. I race my car and want it bullet proof in the drivetrain department. I also have a 6-spd richmond but the rating of hp and tork is only 450. I would not beat on this box, They have an improvment kit for the 600, G-force is the one that sells it. Cranks Velasco is an 4-12 week wait, L.A.E is 2-4 weeks. Same stroker crank they are 100 dollars apart in price. Rods, have you checked with Howard cams if you are using BBC rods, Same work as oliver,manley, cunningham's and crower, but they are 799.00 not 1200.00. They are good for 1000 hp. Talk to them. I think they are I beam and not H. but the wieght is very near the same. Good luck with the build up, The parts list is great but the machinist is what makes it all work. Rick Lake

*I'm sure if I had read the original post I might assume the same about a "no cap" buildup but of course we don't want to be throwing away money...what I'm hoping for is the sum of the engines parts not to exceed 19 - 20K while allowing 3 - 3.5 for the trans, clutch, housing etc.
*I believe the stock rear gears in a Superformance are 3.73s. As of yet I've not decided whether or not I'll keep them but judging by information I have found I'm thinking they'll have to be changed to either 3.08s or 3.27s. Originally I had intended on installing some version of a 6spd so I hadn't really worried much about the rear gears being to short. Unfortunately the more research I do, the more it seems I'll have to settle with a 4spd top-loader as many of the transmission "namely the Tremec 600rr" I had in mind, seem to be failing when installed in other cobras with equal or lesser hp than is expected out of this build. Frankly, I hadn't heard much info/feedback on my other inquiries into the G-force, but I'll definitely look into it.
*Howard cams? No I hadn’t heard of them but I'll take a look. I have to wonder though how they can be priced at roughly 2/3s the price of other comparable rods, is it simply because they are I beam vs. H??

Dropped it on the tile floor. Then dropped it off at the dealer. Obviously Tag isn't putting Velascio Cranks in their watches. Maybe I should make the recommendation. I only dropped it from about a foot up.

I wouldn't write-off the TKO-600s until you get some more info. I asked, but the poster never said whether he was talking about TKO-500s or 600s. The earlier TKOs were rated at a maximum of around 400-450 ft-lb (I forget the exact number). Cobra owners relied on the fact that the trans was designed for a 3000 lb car for it to survive behind some of the big HP engines. The TKO-500 and 600 are supposed to be rated at 500 ft-lb and 600 ft-lb respectively. If the failures were earlier TKOs, then that is understandable and you would not be getting one of those because they are not available new anymore. If the failures were 500s or 600s, then there may be a design problem with the new trans. The nice thing about the new 500s or 600s, besides the improved load rating, is the ratios will work well with even the SPF 3.73 rear.

Oh, I put the Velasco in mine for the same reason as Jamo. I already had a lot in the engine, the difference wasn't a lot compared to the total. Of course, you can nickle and dime yourself into a really big "a lot".

Remember that you bought an historic class automatic watch. They didn't like being dropped in the 50s and 60s anymore than they do now. Automatics are the most sensitive to jarring.

I dropped one of my Panerais that is able to withstand pressures to its crystal to a zillion feet below the water surface...and it still cracked the sumb!tche.:JEKYLHYDE

Where does one find info about Velasco? I did a Google search and could not find their website. If they don't have one, who can you order their crank from? I've found the same problem with LA Enterprises and Sonny Bryant cranks as well. Thanks!

need4spd G-Force 7178674352# Mike is incharge fax 7178673983# competitionproducts have the same location./ Are you using BBC rods in your motor? these rods are 4340 steel with arp 2000 bolts I was told that the rods are good for 1khp. The steel is US not china. He said if it broke they would replace it no question if the rod was defective. There is an article in chevy mag about rods and this company explains what they do to there rods with maken the grain of the metal flow in 1 direction, they are shotpeen and xrays for any inperfections. Give them a call. 18002330199 Howard cams is 9202335228 They sell the same rods for the same price with the same manufactoring done. I believe that the rods are built in house. Ask questions I do, more than once. These 600rr trans are in vipers. As long as you are not doing 4G hole shots with this trans you should have no problem, Vipers use Pilots on them I think. I would n't put a softer tire on it and do holeshots or burnouts 200 ft long. Call G-Force and ask what the HP and TORK rate is for there updated kit. A new shaft and gear set comes in the kit. You can break thing part in your car if you bang it hard enought. With the motor you are looking to build I would not go with3.73 with a big block, 307 or 327 would be the most. You want to be able to cruise with the car also. I wouldnot call 3.73 a cruising gear. Hope this helps, build a tork motor with a max 6500 rpm and not worry about a hp. I think you will be happier when it is all said and done. Tork gets it moving, hp keeps it moving.:) Good Luck Rick Lake

Missed your earlier post...lo siento. That 496 Joe is building for Smitty (Dick) is to replace the brand new rebuild Smitty sorta imploded at the Historics last August, which made the Fliptop play slip n' slide. Neat how these historic cars' cross paths nearly half a century later.

That build is behind several, as you say. Some teeny weeny Offys for some midgets, some full blown fueler drag motors, some pretty flatheads (with Strombergs no less), a Shelby block going into an original GT40, and some other stuff.

Joe used to hop up my Dad's and other Armenian farmers' pickups in the 60s...great drag races in the vineyards.:3DSMILE:

Jamo Here's another master builder that hides in the shadows. Even at Joe's age. The old line you get, " I just build the motors and hope they last for a couple of races" Smitty lost and oil line to the motor at the races. Everyone is lucky that the oil trail was seen. Other point If they stopped putting him at the back of the race group, he wouldn't drive so hard to get to the front. That 496 is going to be ahell of alot more than that 431 he's been running for years. The race committee will add 500 lb to slow him down:eek: :rolleyes: We will see:) Rick Lake

It's a smart move to specifiy the exact journal sizes and Balance Bob Weight when ordering these crankshafts...and specify you want the correct rear oil seal grooves in the crank too.....
The LA Ent (Kryptonite) cranks will need an additional spacer for the timing set unless you get it (modified Timing Set) from Chris At Shelby...if not we stock that spacer...

A 30 year old oil line will do funny things. Saw it happen at the race.

The Joes and the Jorges (I know...George ain't old, but he's got old manners, which is a good thing in my book) and others just quietly go about building damn good stuff and let their customers do the talking. Kee's that way with his toploaders, and Velasco's name sorta has folks get misty eyed.

In Joe's case, Andretti liked him enough to win Indy over 30 years ago with one of his motors. ;)
