1961 TBird 390 Question

I have a chance to buy a 1961 TBird parts car with the original 390. I have not looked at the car yet, but the owner says it is the original engine. According to my Steve Christ book, the 5th digit of the VIN identifies (which is "Z") the motor as being an HP engine and that it has an oil pressure relief valve at the rear of the block. It was unclear to me if it would be a solid lifter cam motor - anyone know? All I know is the 1) Z designation and that 2) it is a 4 barrel. According to the book, same designations for a 1962 would be a 6V motor. Would appreciate any help with the particulars (solid lifter or not, were all '61 TBirds the same, estimated value, etc) - as much as possible w/o having the casting #'s (trying to save myself a trip).

Joe,

I don't have any breakdown on the 61 T-Birds but if you will go to the Thunderbird Club webb site they are like this club for Cobras. Some of them will have an answer for every year T-Bird made.

61 390 hp could go either way. They are probably hydraulic. Pull a valve cover and look it will be clear fron the push rod / rocker assembly.

Good running 390's always worth $1k more for the HP. Core motors likly worth $500-800.

Thanks!

Seems like I might have to go and have a look-see. Anybody interested in the car minus the engine? $500?

Joe

Hi Joe,
The best engine I ever owned was a 1961 390 interceptor{375hp},I wish I had it now..
All i can tell you is the police interceptor I had was solid lifter only, and the 61's still have the antiquated spring button holding the cam in ,but one just has to tap two already there holes and add the bolt in plate if my memory is correct,I was 16 when I did it.
Tbirds in 61 all came with the 300 hp 390,I am not sure but I think it is hydraulic.
How good is the interior ?
have fun,,Tim
