FFR428, thanks much for that 428CJ link, it explains all my questions...
CJ blocks have the "C" and pass car blocks have the "A". I have the "C". Blocks made at the original foundry have the 352 on them, and blocks made that the MCC foundry have 105. I have 352. The late blocks made at the original foundry before they switched to the MCC foundry have NO casting numbers. I have no casting numbers. My date code is 9B11, which is Feb 11, 1969. I have the "428" cast inside the center freeze hole. I have the re-enforced main webbing. Starting in 68, Ford began stamping partial VINs into the rear of the block. I have a partial VIN stamped on my block. So it appears I have a true 428 CJ block, in std bore. I guess I did pretty good on this one. I paid $600 for it. |
Nice score on the block! Yea the CJ site is a great source of info. Don't forget to take a look see at the Pro-gram caps if your thinking about the crossbolts. Good luck and congrats on the CSX ... G.

Yeah, I was considered the Pro-gram caps. I prefer to do the girdle, but hell, maybe I'll use both :).
This may be a stupid question, but where the heck does the oil drain back into the block? I don't see any oil return holes? Oh, and an NOS 428 service block just came up on ebay. It's got the "X" you mentioned in the lifter area, so I assmue it's a high nickle block. |
There has been a guy on eBay recently selling a nice girdle. I think they go for $249 or something close to that. It is rumored that the infamous X is 2% of nickle added to some FE blocks for strength. This has been beat to death on the Ford FE forum and after some blueprints and casting formulas were found and some metal testing NO traces of nickle were found in the ( x and non x) FE blocks tested. Some however insist there indeed is nickle in the X blocks. So the myth continues....... and BTW the drainback holes are on each end of the cyl head deck up by where the intake goes and the big holes inside the lifter galley. G.

I must be blind because I don't see any oil drain holes. I see two small holes on the top of the head deck, but they lead to water jacket. Either way, I see there is no oil drain at the bottom of the head. No wonder these motors have oil drainback issues. What the heck were they thinking??
|
You know your right. I was thinking of the drainback from the heads sorry. I believe it's just the center holes by the lifters for drainback to the block. And the hole in the front that drains to the timing chain area. G.

Surge I hope your block checks out ok. That's a great deal on it if it does. I bought a running 428CJ this weekend that is C8OE on the heads and intake and I think C8ME on the block. (need to get a better view to be sure. I will need to add the accessories like carb, dist, and water pump but should be ready to go.
When do you expect delivery of the car? |
