FE crank seal leaking ?
Hey guys, I did my best to keep the crank seal aligned when bolting the timming cover on but, it's leaking, quite a bit too. Any ideas ? Also, why did Ford place the seal inside, the cover ?

Crank sleeve might be worn or you didn't hammer the seal in deep enought?. ford made a sleeve for the sleeve back then for that problem, I'm sure a new one is available.
I use a little sealer on the seal.......

I split the first spacer so, I bought another one. I also bought a new sleeve & sealed it with Ford silicone. I'm fairly sure I installed them correctly. That's why I don't understand why it's leaking ?

I notice when I installed mine twice ( had to remove it the first time to install torrington bearings ) that (both times) the outside rubber lip that rides on the crank spacer got turned under on one side. I had to move the timing cover up and down and side to side slightly to get the seal to sit flat against the spacer. It was hard to see the rubber turned inward , but I was afraid of a leaky seal so I was watching it really closely. It happened both times that I installed the timing cover. It is hard to describe exactly what I mean. If you need further clarification I can set up the extra cover, seal and spacer that I have and take a picture. They say a pic is worth a thousand words. Hope this helps.

Paul- that would be interesting to see if you have time. I believe I know what your talking about, maybe that's what happened ?
Perry- I should have tried 3M or permatex but the guy I bought the cover & seal from sent a tube of the Ford stuff so I used it insted.

Grease up a small flat screw driver and slide it under the seal gently, slide it around the seal and work it gently until
the seal rest correctly, this should work.
Next time you install the sleeve, grease it
up.

you know that you install the crank sleeve in seal in the civer and then bolt the cover down so the pressure is even all the way. then the oilpan around the seal.you want the cover with seal centered on the crank sleeve.I get a deal on blue RTV.Wasn't about to remove the oilpan and replace two oilpan gaskets.Trim off the excess .The sleeve may be available.But a good hydraulic shop that cam selective fill cylinder rods ( it's a plating prosses )should be able to fill and dress that groove.
