which carb/intake for 428
Hi Cobra dudes,
Going to a swap meet this weekend. Thought I might find a used carb and intake for my project. Any advise? I am planning on a mildly built (and budget conscious) 428 with E-heads, single carb setup for a cobra. I was thinking Holley DP 750 that I can rebuild on a performer RPM manifold. Help me out here. Also, I am not an expert with Holleys, so advise on numbers/features to help i.d. the right one would be appreciated. Thanks. |
Rickster,
Ok, here goes. On my 1969 428SJC that is bored .065 and has the stock 427 heads that came on it, I am using a Holly 850 double pumper with large jets. It has a dealer installed high rise aluminum Edelbrock intake and they set it up on the dyno and this was the best combination for mine. The Holly number for a 750 double pumper is 4779 and will be found on the front side of the choke tower. An 800 double pumper is 4780 and an 850 is 4781. The double pumpers should also have a manual choke which you can remove and replace with an electric one if you want. From what you said about your engine I think the 750 would be a good choice as your's doesn't sound as if you are going for a radical engine. What cam are you going to use? If you find a used one, check to be sure the linkeage works smoothly and that the butterflys open all the way. Also find a flat spot and check for any warpage of the mounting plate. Ron :) |
Edelbrock heads respond really well to an Edelbrock Performer intake. The bueaty in getting the intake is that the ports match up almost perfectly without much port matching.
Any good vacuum secondary carb will work well for your needs. You could run a double pumper if you like but for a mild street engine a good Holley or Demon 750 would be perfect. http://www.edelbrock.com/automotive/headford460.html |
Rickster is the swap meet in CT if so where?? Thanks.

I think this would be the Big-E swap meet in MA.
As far as intakes, I've seen 460 Edelbrock heads and a Edelbrock intake be off a good 1/8". Can't say the same for FE's. I myself after seeing the quaility of the "Blue Thunder" intakes bought one for my FE. And I'll be running a Holley 750 Vac. sec. |
