Lakewood Bellhousing dowell pins
Hey everyone:
I'm having problems truing the bellhousing for the tranny input shaft. My dial indicator says the housing is out by 0.035. Lakewood dowell pins only go to .021. Can bellhousings be out that much? I'm bolting it to a new Shelby 427 Alum Block. Seems high to me... But this is my first time doing this. I can have custom dowells made if need be. Your thoughts appreciated.. Thanks, Smooter :CRY: |
What are the measurements that you got for 0, 90, 180, 270 degress? I'm just going through this now with a similar setup.
David Kee is a great resource. Make sure that it is clean on the bellhousing. I took a file to it just to make sure that there were not any paint globs or other such issues. Also, make sure that it is flush and tight all the way around. Get the measurements and then divide the difference by two and you have your values. Luckily mine was not too far off -- going to need the .014 offset dowel. Now if I can just get the dowels out, I'm good to go... :( Scott |

This appears to me not to be a big problem. I am at the very same stage as you. The Lakewood alignment procedures say divide the total indicator readings by 2. My chart says you would need dowel part # 15970. This is the same dowel set that my engine/bellhousing needs. We have the same engine/bellhousing/car combination. Guys there was a tread on this last year. First Get Allen head bolts to bolt to the block. Next drill or grind out all the bolt hole on the bell housing befor mounting to the block. Mine was .032 out when I started. Your pins are long enought that you can weld nuts to the bellhousing after you center it. Clean the center hole with a wire brush, NO GRINDER. Put 2 bolts on by the pins and do the measurements. You want numbers at 3,6,9 and 12 oclock. I used a deadblow hammer and banged the bell housing to center. This takes time, 2 hours when in the car. final for my car was .002 when done. After centered add all bolts and recheck measurement. If OK get to nuts and grind out threads until they just fit on the dowels. Weld them top and bottom to bellhousing. Let cool and recheck numbers. You should be right on the money. I have not tryed to mount my bellhousing to another FE motor and check for center. Your bellhousing may only work on this block when done. When WELDING UNHOOK BATTERY TO PROTECT ELECTRONIC IN CAR. :eek: Good luck, check the measurements twice, the magnetic base may move sometimes. %/ Rick Lake

Mine was out about .035 to .040. We got it dialed in to .0015, but used the weld in dowel pins and not the offset ones. For that much movement you will probably need to open the rest of the bolt holes as well.

I got mine from Summit, but local speed shops should carry them. Your local auto parts store may even carry them, but I never checked.
