427 on ebay, Casting numbers?
Take a look at this on ebay, I cant find the block casting numbers shown in any of my books, am I missing something?
The important pictures shown on the auction page are either transposed or heavily "glared out", makes you wonder...........http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...RK%3AMEWA%3AIT |
Maybe he has the wrong casting numbers. Sometimes they are a little distorted and hard to read. It might be a C5AE-H or C6AE-B instead. I've seen 5's that look like 6's and B's that look like H's. It's a solid lifter block and shows the screw in plugs and crossbolts. If your interested shoot him an email and ask??? G.

Does not appear to be a side oiler. The H heads aren't a big deal. But the price is right, IF the build was done right. Thats a tough call.
|
Suppose to be a 428. It shouldn't be a 427. Maybe a fakey-doodle as my buddy at BJ says... But for the money it might be worth it. A replica 427 for a replica...

This link is for Bill Malones car, listed as a 427 side oiler C6AE-H motor. Hmmmmm,,,, the plot thickens. I see the high bid of 3500 or so is now back down in the 2K range. Somebody dropped out and/or changed his bid. |
some comments....
66-427 C6AE-H with screw in freeze plugs. (1) Likely a C5...but with a Ford...who knows for sure. It has forged aluminum flat top pistons, (2) with that head the compression ratio will be to high. 427 nut and bolt rods, (3) Stock Ford FE Rod cast crank, (4) Cast crank could be a 390 or anything...nothing to write home about. solid lifter cam ( which is all that you can use in a 427 FE) (5) I'd like to see the date code on the block as 66-427 doesn't mean alot. , C8AE-H heads (6) no big deal , aluminum 4 barrel intake manifold (7) unknow quality , Cobra Lemans aluminum valve covers, (8) Ok aluminum Cobra T-pan (9) not in a Cobra please...cast aluminum... , mallory dual point distributor. (10) OK..but not the best choice for most engines This motor is ready to go and would be perfect for a Kit Cobra, (11) Hmmm? Galaxie, Mustang or any other project that you might want a classic Ford FE 427 for But the block with the right date code might be worth it... |
Lineslinger,
Be careful when considering this engine. It looks to me like it is a marine block. I can tell because two of the three "sideoiler humps" have had some material ground off. Call him and ask. Also ask if the core plugs are brass. marine blocks used brass. I would want to inspect this engine in person. in particular, I would want to look into the block's water-jacket to see if it lived in salt water. Also I would want the pan removed to inspect the cylinders and rotating assembly. If the crankshaft is out of a reverse rotating engine, it will most likely leak out the rear seal when used in normal rotation direction. These are just a few points. good luck, Steve http://i10.ebayimg.com/01/i/03/53/63/4d_1_b.JPG In this photo, you can see that the lifter galleries are not drilled = a solid cam only http://i15.ebayimg.com/03/i/03/54/8f/4f_1_b.JPG |
NOT a side oiler!!
TURK |
Good observations fellas,
I didn't intend to buy it but when I spotted a 427 with no reserve it did make me curious. After cross referencing the casting numbers it really didn't make any sense, thus the new thread. If I hear from the guy I will post an update. Thanks for the information, this website is one of the best rerference guides I have ever come across. |
I don't see a problem with his ad. He never refers to it as being a side-oiler, rather simply a 427 cross bolted engine - good move on his part. For anyone interested and 99.9% of the applications this would give you most external ques of a side-oiler but with money left over.

Cracker,
I agree, the ad is ok. I don't think that was questioned here. The seller has not gone out of his way to point out that it as a marine engine though.... Steve |
The reason it grabbed my attention in the first place is the casting number listed, I couldn't find C6AE-H listed in any of my material. 1966 or any other year. I figured someone on this sight might have some insight. Who knows, maybe the numbers are not stamped clearly on the block, either way it is a little curious.
|
I noticed the seller edited the auction and says the casting number is actually C5AE.... a '65 center oiler. Should be a good block, I wouldn't be too crazy about buying one all built up with 390 heads, rods and crank though.
|
The seller did send me an email response to my questions confirming he made a typo in his description.
rritchey has it right, a C5AE center oiler. Latest bid I saw was a little over 4 grand. |
