FE Cylinder Heads & Blocks
I've located 2 FE engines.
The 1st one has valve covers with "THUNDERBIRD" embossed on them. The casting number on the heads is: C4AE 0060 Casting number on block 04A DIF The 2nd engine. Head: C8AE-H Casting # on block 59 352 Also 25A DIF I believe these are both 390's Would anyone happen to know of a definitive way of determining the displacement thru the casting numbers? Thanks |
Check the right side of the block toward the front for a different casting no., something like C6ME.

The only definitive way is too pull the head!

I can't tell you what blocks you have without a different casting number. There should be more numbers on the blocks. The numbers should be similar to the head casting numbers. Example: C8AE-A is a 68-76 390 block.
As for the heads: C4AE = 64-65 352,390 C8AE-H = 68 std. 390 w/AIR I got that info from "How to Rebuild Your Big-Block Ford" by Steve Christ. |
The one with the thunderbird valve covers might be an early block if it has 2 bolt motor mounts vs the later four bolt if original. Check for the date code on the blocks. It's below the oil filter adapter mounting pad and is a number/letter/number(s) sequence. As mentioned look for the casting numbers on the blocks. Fords early blocks (60-64) were pretty good for casting numbers. They did not repeat on different blocks like some of the later numbers.

Thanks all for your help
