C6 kickdown hookup on dual quads
Hope someone out there can help me with this one.
How do I hook-up a C6 kickdown cable (I'm planning to use a Lokar cable set-up) on a dual quad set-up. The carbs are of course mounted "backwards". Has anyone done this before??? I've looked at 1966 Ford manuals and although there is mention of a dual quad set-up with a C6, there is no detail of a kickdown hook-up. Thanks Greg |
There's no detail because the kickdown method changed over the years. You would need the specifically designed rods for your application, all of which is moot information if you have a cable.
I have a Lokar cable. I had to have a bracket made up and mounted ahead of the carb throttle linkage which allowed the cable to activate the kickdown lever. The cable goes forward from the carb to the bracket and then back towards the firewall. I'd call Lokar, I'm sure they could walk you through what needs to be done. |
This is a project I have been putting off. I need the same thing and have a Lokar cable too. Maybe I'll get around to it this summer.

Well, the considered opinion of all the Galaxie experts on the web is that Ford never made a dual quad 427 connected to a C6. However most thought it could be done with a mix of 65 and 66 factory parts and a little inginuity. Pony Carbs and Lokar say it can be done by fabbing a couple of brackets and arms, so I'll add this to my skunkworks list and see what I can come up with.

I had a 63 1/2 Galaxie with 2x4v and a C6 with The kick down hooked up. (Not factory of course) I used the 67 Mustang lever on trans with the short cable from Mustang. Had to make a bracket off of the accelator pivot at the firewall. Now your saying to yourself how does that help me I have an Accelerator cable. I don't know but I thought that it might help get your wheel turning. You could probably take a cable from your linkage down to your kick down lever on the trans and make a couple of brackets. Look at the 67Mustang set up. You don't have to use the kickdown rod on the carb. Just have enough slack in the cable to pull trans into passing gear at full throttle.

Thanks Tony. I kept thinking I would need some special arm or linkage on the rear carb to cut in at 3/4 or full throttle, but your advice is confirmed by what I've read on the various websites that the Lokar cable works by starting off at idle with about 3/4" of slack in the cable, a little tension at 1/2 throttle and cable operating the trans lever at WOT.

I just wish I photo documented everthing so I could remember better. One more thing the short Mustang trans kickdown lever was in the 12o'clock position and not in the 9o'clock like most passenger cars so a bracket on the bellhousing would probably do it for that side and because the carbs are set backwards a bracket to the rear carb stud on the passenger side so the cable could be pulled. Could make for a nice neat installation. I was thinking how to make it look without having a cable ten feet long and just thought I'd give my ideal.
