FE Aluminum edelbrock water pump

I have one of these pumps on my 427 center oiler. There is about 500 miles on it and it has started to squeal/rattle. If I grab the pulley and lift, there is a slight amount of play. My guess is the bearings are going bad.

My question is: would I be able to rebuild this pump myself? Are the parts readily available? Has anyone else done so? Or would I have to send it away to have it done because it takes special tools?

Got my attention.

Paul:

I'm getting ready to buy one of them for a new 427 build that I am blueprinting now. I would call them up and see how they react. With 500 miles on it, I would expect a new replacement with no questions asked or I would tell them to stick it up their bottom. You shouldn't have to "repair" that one. You're the one stuck with the hassel replacing it. I would appreciate hearing their response from them, since I haven't bought mine yet; but if they don'[t give you good service, I'll buy a different one.

I agree. 500 miles is a short time to kill a front bearing in a water pump. The usual cause (besides a defect) is the belt tension being too tight. Did you run a tight tension? It is better to run on the loose side if possible. But, Edelbrock should stand behind their product. I too have bought one of these for my 428 and have not run it yet.

Send it back to Vic. He'll send you a new one.

I think I paid $17.00 for the parts from Edelbrock. Make sure you get an impeller with the parts. You get seal, bearing and impeller.

Glass bead the unit before you put it back together, makes it look very nice.
