427 Stalls out
When driving my Cobra down the road it seems to be running fine. When it comes to a stop it stalls. If it is still rolling you can let the clutch out and it will kick over no problem.
Unfortunately I am not driving it yet. The guy completing my car just informed me of this today. I am planning to head to Vegas on Friday, after a 20 month wait, to pick-up my completed Cobra. Now I hear she ain't doing so good. I am thinking possibly timing, carb adjustment or vacuum leak? Any other suggestions?? When I dyno'd my engine up here it idled relatively well considering my cam. Any suggestions would be great. Wanted to get some idea's prior to heading down there in case this problem is not solved by then. -65/66 427 SO -Dove HR Heads -Valves set at Cam Manufact. setting of .018=I, .028-E -Single Holley 4 barrel (brand new at Dyno) -Crower Cam I-.598 E-.614 @.050" I-254,E-266 -Original Dual point distributor -Initial timing at 10 deg, I think? Thanks in advance. Mike |
The float level is probably too high.

I had the same problem with dual 4bbl carbs and adjusting the carb floats fixed the stalling when braking to a stop.

Mike,
All of the above plus the following will improve run quality and reliability. If the cam is flat tappet, bring the cold lash way down for your aluminum heads. .016 I and .018 E works for me with slightly more aggressive cam. Set initial at 12 to 14 deg and total advance to 36 - 38deg, all in by 2500. Ditch the dual-point and get MSD or Unilite distributor with MSD 6AL. Good luck, |
Had the same exact issue with my 428. Check your float level as said above. Also, check to see if you have a stuck needle. Everything was great after changing out the float needles and readjusting the float level.

Hi Everyone,
Thank you very much for the suggestions. I think these will help get my engine running like it should. Can't wait to pick it up this weekend. Just hope we can get this issue resolved easily. Thanks again, Mike |
If the problem persist, try 'vent whistles'.........

This is what I heard back from my buddy Kris who is working on my car.
"The float level seemed good. We advanced the timing, but once it got warmed up, it flooded the engine and died. We removed and cleaned the needle and seat, but did not test drive it. I am now 100% certain it is totally a carb problem." Any thoughts?? Thanks.. Mike |
