Sidewinder intake..water temp help!!
1 Attachment(s)
After waitng for 5 months for my car to come back from Shelby I've been trying to finally get er done but it seems to be one thing after another. I probably don't want to hear the answer to this but here goes. I've been making good progress until tonite when I un-rolled the water temp assembly that attaches to the intake manifold. Seems this assembly is at least a 1/4" bigger in diameter than the hole. Is there any adaptor or any way around this other than removing the intake and having it re-drilled and tapped? Pleas God....no more headaches!
Thanks Gary |
Gary,
It looks like the actual fitting for the sender is installed in an adapter. Unthread the sender from the adapter and then check thread sizes of the sender versus your intake. If it does not thread right in, you may just need an adaptor to go from 1/8 to 1/4, for example. The gauge manufacturer can supply the adapters or your local hardware store may have something in brass that will work. My oil temp sender is like this as well as my water temp. Good luck, Gary |
Gary, Summit Racing carries a Earl's 1/2" to 3/8" reducer for $3.75.

If that's an autometer gauge, they seem to come with a 1/2 NPT adapter. The smaller 3/8 NPT adapter is Autometer part #2263. You should be able to get it from Summit or I would think any speed shop. Don't know why they don't have this adapter included with the gauge.

Gary, call me because I may have the adapter that you need. Also let me know what else you are missing and I will bring it when I come over.

Man I love this place. You guys are great! I do need to stop posting late at night in the dark....or start using spell check.
thanks again Gary |
Gary,
I had the same problem with my Edelbrock manifold. I ended up pulling the manifold and having the hole tapped bigger. I probably could have rigged up some kind of adapter but since the hole is smaller than the sending unit, the adapter would have been above the surface of the manifold and stood out like a "sore thumb." Who wants a 2 or 3 inch stack of brass fitting adapters sitting above the manifold? Yuck. Chris |
I noticed the same thing and started to go look for an adapter. Then, I said, I better check these fittings. Turns out, I had different fittings on the temperature probes for the oil and water gauges, but that was OK because the fitting sizes in the manifold and oil pan were different sizes as well and it worked out. You may be able to swap the sensor wires on the gauges if you have the same setup as mine. Just a thought.

This will show you just what you need. What you want is the 3/8 pipe adapter. Rick |
