Help!
Hello. I am considering buying an original 1966 Fairlane GT that has a 390 engine in it. I was wondering whether or not the '66 390 engine is a desirable engine or not and was also wondering what kind of parts I would need to build a 550hp monster engine. I would like for the engine to be streetable and be able to run along with the top-loader 4-speed that is in the car. Thanks.:JEKYLHYDE

It's a very sound and desirable engine, as long as the block is intact and not overbored. There are plenty of parts and many excellent machine shops on this site.
Check Gessford Machine (an advertiser here), and my personal favorite. Speak to George Anderson, who can build you one killer, reliable, motor out of a sound block. |

Like everything else, how much it costs depends on what you parts you use, how knowledgeable about FE's the machine shop is, and how much you want to push it. How important is reliability? Do you want a streetable engine? The questions go on and on.
I'd call George at Gessford, and all the other FE experts whose websites appear in the advertisers section on this site. The big 3 are probably Gessford, Keith Craft, and Southern Automotive, in no particular order. There is no simple answer to your question. |
You will spend about 10,000.00 for a nice 390 block FE stroker that will yeild somewhere in the 430 to 440 cubic inch range that will make 550HP. This can be done with good heads, 10.5 to1, Edelbrock or Blue Thunder single 4 dual plane intake from carburetor to oil pan and dyno tested and tuned. Good luck, Keith Craft

There you go, from one of the experts! You can do it on the cheap, but if you want a good FE from a reputable place, that's what you're looking at.
You could also try to do it yourself, but you should do a lot of research. |
You would need the 1966 standard bore 428 block I have stitting in my garage. It is a C6ME correct for your Fairlaine and the 1967 Shelby GT-500.
I saw a 1967 GT-500 not sell for 132k last week at auction. What's that make the block worth??? |
