427FE weight comparison
In looking at Genesis's web site, I see that they quote the aluminum 427 FE block is at 118lbs and the cast at 230lbs (30lbs over the original block).
From this I am to assume that the AL block is 82lbs lighter than stock and 112lbs lighter than the original. What I am unable to find is the weights of the original cast heads versus the AL heads of today. Any one know the specs? Looks like the Genesis block is a little cheaper than the Shelby AL block, but I was unable to find any weights on the Shelby AL block... Any one find it? What I am getting at in the long run is a comparison of the 427FE as compared to a small block stoker (say 351W). If I am going to spend this much money on a AL 427 and heads, I am hoping that it would get to the same weight as the 351W with AL heads. Anyone know the actual weight of the 351W cast block? I am aware that the crank, rods, pistons etc... will make a difference between the two, but am trying to look just at the blocks for a level playing field of comparison. Thanks, Chris |
Here's what the ERA website says about various engine weights: http://www.erareplicas.com/engines.htm#fe

Chris,
Thanks for the link. Just when I thought I had the ERA website memorized, something new comes along. Very helpful. Thanks again, Chris |
Chrispy,
My iron med. riser heads with 2.25" intakes weigh 44lbs each assembled.
My Shelby alum. stage II heads with the same valve sizes also assembled, weigh 22lbs each. Hope this helps. |
Chas,
Great!! So if I do my math right we are looking at 126lbs difference from a original cast iron block and heads versus a AL block and heads. |
