Tunnel Port 427FE
Hey Guys. I have a question concerning the Tunnel Port 2x4 intakes. I am building a 427 SO for my 1966 Fairlane, and I have always wanted to put a dual-quad tunnel port on it, but now everyone is saying that a 2x4 intake is much too difficult to use on the street. This is really depressing, as I have always wanted a 2x4 setup. I was also considering building a Holley fuel-injected 427 Tunnel Port, just to be different. Does anyone know of anyone who makes a fuel injection system for a 2x4 intake? Also, what are the problems/concerns associated with using a 2x4 intake?

Just about any intake manifold can be
modified for fuel injection. The only difference with a dual quad manifold would be using two throttle bodies instead of one. There are any number of companies out there that specialize in modifying manifolds for fuel injection. ....Fred |
You can get some pretty neat 4 barrel throttle bodies with the injectors built in. They combine the fuel rails and everything and a pair of them would hide nicely under one of those Oval Cobra aircleaners. The advantage of this setup would be that you wouldn't need to modify the TP manifold, the whole thing would be bolt on.
Here's a link to a site down under that has the throttle bodies but they are probably available in the US also. Look up the V8 4 barrel setup here: EFI Hardware Cheers |
I think you are getting nervous about nothing. 2x4 will not contribute to drivability problems. They are tunable to a great degree. For instance, I experimented with running on 8 venturis at idle and with 4. Four worked better. I would say the combination is drivable.
Probably what has a greater impact is that most 2x4 TP intakes are single-plane. I ran one of these and I loved it. Yes, a Cobra is a vehicle 1000 lbs lighter. But, IMO, that setup is quite doable in the Fairlane. Its not like you want to idle around all day, right? If not, I would go for it. |
Don't give up on that Tunnel Port intake idea so quickly. I've had a 427 SO in my Cobra since 1994. I ran a Sidewinder dual-plane single 4-bbl. for about 6 years. I changed to a Tunnel Wedge single-plane 2x4 bbl. intake and have been running it for the past six years. I have no experience with a Tunnel Port set up, but here's my experience with the Tunnel Wedge.
The Tunnel Wedge did take some more tuning effort to get it dialed-in, but that was just minor adusting on the progressive linkage, some accelerator pump cam experimenting, and front-carb / rear-carb idle adjusting, and re-jetting. All that was a Saturday afternoon of driving, stopping, adjusting, etc. I had to do most of that stuff with the single 4-bbl. carb on the first intake! I'm definitely not a tuning expert, I just keep fiddling with stuff until it works. I like the looks, driveability and power my setup provides. I'll probably never return to the single 4-bbl. system. thejoker21 Rick Long built a HR with 2 accell throttle bodys 10-12 years ago. 2 77135 kits where put togeather. The car ran very good after it was setup. You will need to add a larger fuel system supply lines, 1/2" to supply and 3/8" return. A port system may be better and easier to do. You may want to look into a TWM system. I don't think some of the guys would be too happy if you are cutting up a virgin TP manifold. You may want to look on e-bay for a spare manifold single 4 barrel, you could mount a 1350 or 1550 cfm throttle body on a 4150 flanged manifold. This will give you all the cfm you will need for your motor. The brain or PCM is up to you. I use a Speed pro system, the new name is FAST. Rick Lake

Rick,
Don't get me wrong, but my intentions were never to "cut up a virgin TP manifold". What I am looking for is something similar to the F.A.S.T. setup where I could just bolt on two throttle bodies, program the computer, do the wiring, tune and be done with it. BTW, I am planning on making between 600-630 hp out of my motor. I have a friend who has a 1963 galaxie that is pretty streetable and he is making around 680-690hp out of his Med. riser 427 2x4 setup with dual BG carbs. But he has to tune his carbs every two weeks. Plus I think that a Tunnel Port or Tunnel Wedge intake would be killer, and the crowds would be like  when they saw it was injected!!! |
Like was mentioned just use the two trottle bodys with the fast system with the right tuning would work great. I believe with the right camshaft and carburetors you could make the 2X4 deal work good. We have done some 450 vacume secondary carbs that have worked great on the 2X4 engines that are very drivable, you give up a little HP but they would work fine on 625HP engine. Good luck, Keith Craft

first, are we talking tunnel port or tunnel wedge?
They are two different animals |
I'm running 2X4 with Holley carbs. The guy with the Galaxie "tuning" his carbs every week doesn't know what's he's doing. NOT neccessary at all.
I had to work out the main jet settings, it took several times of changing jets to "dial them in". I also changed the power valve 2 or 3 times to "dail it in". After that, zero problems! Runs great and I never touch them. EFI, you will be "dialing in" that system as long or longer than going with carbs. Twin carbs, the coolest thing going on an FE. |
