Oil Weight For 428

What oil weight is recommended for a 428 CJ. It will be used for street use.

Thanks

What part of the world are you in? Hot? Cold? Since the 428 is not a high winding engine no "special" considerations need to be taken other than ambient temperatures. On average, 30 weight will do the trick for most of the USA during the regular driving times. I'm just guessing you'll not be driving in the snow.

I use 10W-30 in the winter months (Oct - April) and then switch to 15W-40 in the summer (May - Sept). I have been using the Royal Purple non racing grade of Synthetic for about 3 years now. Works great although the 9 quarts does not get much mileage on it. I am using the K&N oil filter. It appears to be an excellent filter and I like the nut on the end of the filter for easy removal. I do two oil changes per year with filter. I put about 3000 miles on the car, most of it with 15W-40 in the sump.

I've learned that Synthetic oil (Mobile One or Syntec) are best for street use, but cut with 20/25% regular oil to keep the engine gaskets from drying out and getting too brittle. My 1990 Ford F150 w/302 used Mobile One since new (5000 miles of Kendall GT1 for break-in) and currently has 221,000 miles without any major engine problems. The only problems I had was the drying out and deterioration of the engine gaskets. After about 150,000 miles, I cut it with regular 10/30 or 10/40 oil and found it to be successful. I'll use 10/40 Syntec with one or two qts. straight Castrol 10/40 and change it every six months, like I do with my Corvette 350. Any synthetic is good for street use but doesn't stick to the cylinder walls and cam journals well when sitting for long periods.

Hey Art. I just got my ERA Cobra back from Tony's. It's done in Black...see my gallery. You gotta stop by sometime.

Oil weight

I live in Kentucky where it gets hot and cold. I knew 30 weight would good choice, but thought about the multi viscosity 10/30, 10/40/ 15/40. Not sure what best for this older model engine (rebuilt).
