pulley questions??
I have a 428 in my 65 LSC that has an overheating problem (has been discussed here elsewhere). In talking to the tech people with about 3 or 4 of the radiator/cooling system componant mfrs they all seem to hinge around the fact that I'm not turning my water pump fast enough at idle. I'm running the March 2 groove pulley set which allows the water pump to be 15% underdriven, for minimizing parasitic losses. They also all say Ebok's water pump flows less GPM at idle rpms, also for HP gains due to less parasitic losses. I'm just running an alternator, nothing else, so I guess I can run the single groove set up. I'm looking for the smallest diameter water pump pulley and the largest diameter crank pulley I can get. The tech guys seem to agree around 30% overdriven being the ticket. I don't think I can get to 30% but I should be able to get a little overdriven. Does anyone have ony oem suggestions or aftermarket. I would like billet or chrome but at this point good cooling is worth more than keeping the bling.

Undy;
March has a set-up for power and another for cooling. Call their tech line and ask, then you can buy at Summit or Jegs. Was that your blue and white LSC at Jenro's Saturday night?

I've got their "cooling" set on there now. Even with those I'm still around 8% underdriven (6" upper w/a 5.5" lower). I Ebay'd a 390 single groove cast iron lower pulley, 20 bucks plus shipping. It's 6 3/4" in diameter. With that pulley I'll be 12.5% overdriven.
When it comes in I'll compare pulley depth etc to my current one, just to assure belt alignment. My next step will be the highest flowing 180 deg t-stat.
Dat be me... gotta shake loose the cobb webs once and a while....

Raise the idle 15% a 650 idle becomes 750. 700 becomes 800... If the problem goes away then the pullies are the problem. If not then look elsewhere.
Most idle over heating problems are the result of inadaquate airflow. Which fan are you using? What does it flow? is it shrouded? I had the same problem with the same components. Changing the fan was the ticket. I use the black magic from flexalite. It is rated at 2800 cfm and keeps my 12:1 SO at 180 degrees on a cool day and about 190 on a warm day. For kicks I took it out last summer in 112 degree heat. It went to 205 but was far from overheating.
