FE Starter.. what do I need?

Well, it's getting close to motor install time, and I'm just trying to gather up the rest of what I need. I have no starter for the car, so that's on the list. I've been told to forget the correctness of an OEM starter, and go with one of the minis, and I am going to do that.

What do people suggest? I have seen them anywhere from $150 to $300. Some are 3:1 ratio, some are 4:1. Some have the adjustable nose for different positions and some don't. Some have threaded holes, and some have untapped holes.

My car has an FE with the Lakewood bell. It's a CSX and it has the Kooks made headers. What do people suggest as far as brands and such?

Anyone used one like this? ....

Or does anyone have one for sale? Thanks!!

I have 10.7:1 on mine and started with a McLeod reduction (liked it, worked well), but while getting it rebuilt (small internal spring busted, warranty item) I bought a standard OEM-type, it workes just fine, and only cost $45 or so...never put the McLeod back on!
I'm thinking the reduction starters are a bit overrated for street motors, unless you have clearance or high compression issues.

I have never used anything on my FE's but stock Ford starters. I use to drag race 1967 427 Cobras, 1964 Fairlane 427 Thunderbolts, 1967 427 R Code Fairlanes and most of them were running 14:1 compression. Just make sure that you have oversize wires running to your starter, battery and grounds. I also installed at a minimun two grounds from the engine to the body.

At home now, I have a 1967 Fairlane GTA with a 428 CJ and a 1967 Fairlane 427 R Code and both of these have standard Ford Starters and they work great, even when hot.

That my 3 cents worth...

I put a stock rebuilt starter on a FE in 1985 and its still going strong, never a problem.
