I have always thought the balance was either internal (crank & bob weight) , having the damper and flywheel being "0" and having no imbalance effect, or external (sometimes called Detroit balance) consisting of Damper, (balancer weight), crank & bob weight, & flywheel only, in this case with the damper and flywheel each having some effect or imbalance. My understanding was the clutch pressure plate was always "0" balanced by the clutch manufacturer so it would not affect the pre determined balance of the engine, regardless of which balance type was utilized. Is this correct???

Theres a ton of things you don't 'have' to do when building your motor. What does get done ofen separates the 'not bad' from the 'really good'. Like degreeing your cam, most likely the cam is good right out of the box, but the only to be 'sure' is to degree it.
You don't have to port and polish heads, deburr engine block oil holes and a myriad of other 'details'. Like balancing 'everything'. That pressure plate is likely OK right out of the box for the average guy, turning average rpms. It cost more to 'blue print and balance' an engine, all depends on where you draw the line how much more. |
I'm curious, what tool do you use to balance a flywheel and pressure plate?

It is attached to the crank & flywheel which is then and spun on balancing machine. Metal is either removed (drilled) or added weld material or Mallory Metal plug inserted in a drilled holes.
