Oil leak out the MSD dizzy/intake
I've got a fair amount of oil leaking out where the dizzy goes into it the intake. This is a new build with an Eddy RPM intake and a Billet MSD distributor. I pulled out the dizy and inspected the wedge shaped o-ring and it looked good. I'm not sure, but it looks like it's in the right way, but I guess it could be upside down. Here is a cut away of how it's installed,.. \l----l/ ,.. as compared to /l----l\. Any ideas????

It's in the right way all right... this is a tough one to call. My old Mallory did not leak, my NEW MSD leaks a little, exactly as you describe. I'm thinking about putting some silicone seal around the rubber. I HATE to 'over tighten' it to stop the leak.
MSD got a bad rubber gasket thing going on? |
I solved this problem by putting a simple O-ring on first, then the MSD seal, which pushed the seal out and made it seal tighter.

That's an interesting illustration there Brad. I never would have thought about doing that!

I just noticed the hold down bolt hole goes all the way thru the intake. I suppose it could be coming thru there, so maybe a bit of black rtv on the bolt might help.

Over a year later, and I'm back to this leak. :o The extra o-ring has not resolved this. Any one else? Do you see a problem with sealing the bolt?

Why not try the seal upside down.I was just thinking about how a hydraulic cylinder seal works.Just my 0.02c!!

I had the same problem and thanks to your great illustration, knew the MSD O-ring was in correctly, but it would not close the gap. An added O-ring tilted the MSD O-ring, so I sliced a bunch of hi-temp electrical tape to the width of the land around the dizzy shaft and wrapped the pieces (each about 12 inches long) around to build up the diameter of the shaft....this gave the MSD tapered O-ring a bigger base to go around and made the overal O.D. greater and it fit snugly back into the hole in the intake. I admit, I had to turn the oil pump shaft a few times and give it a good clunk into the hole but it now fits and doesn't leak!! No RTV. Good luck.

I had a similar oil leak at the distributor hole on my 428 drag race engine. Due to block and deck machining, the rubber distributor seal sat too high up to seal properly against the bore in the intake manifold. What I did was cut the seal groove of the distributor body wider (on a lathe), so that I could fit TWO seals into the groove. Never had a leak since.

Maybe a dumb question but I'll ask it anyway. Would oil leaking here at the dist. be an indication there is a missing or leaking plug in the dist. shaft? I have oil leaking (seems minor) at that location plus a lower than ideal oil pressure. Just wondering if there is a connection between the two. 390fe. Thanks

Maybe you need to add a PCV to lower the crankcase pressure.

PCV system is next on my agenda. That will also provide relief. I agree with Burgs, this seal is no where near any area that has to do with oil pressure. That's why we call them Sport Cars...the sport is you're working on them every weekend.

Thanks guys!

I had that issue with my Edlebrock intake and it seems that the new OEM intake is going to develop that same leak. The distributor, when the lock is tightened down, is depressed low enough that the seal no longer fills the hole in the intake. I don't know if moving the drive gear farther down the shaft or gluing about 1/4 inch of hex stock into the oil pump drive port is the answer. Any suggestions?

did you see it was a nostalgic thread?.....its ok i guess the problem is timeless....
|
Yes, I did see the dates, but I went looking by issue title. I figure after all of this time, someone should have solved the problem. I HOPE>
