installing new pushrods?

I picked up this 67 truck with a 67 mercury 390 in it and found the pushrods were bent. Previouse owner had replaced one of a different length at some point. I now have a new set of the 9.62 push rods. Is there any special procedure I need to follow for installing correctly?

Do I just put them in and tighten the rocker arm shaft stand bolts down?Could this bend my new pushrods? Just wondering if I need to start loose and roll everything over as I go or something to that effect.

Start loose, I don't want the push rods to interfere with the torque settings on the rocker arm stands.

What is the motor going to be used for? You should know if anything has ever been machined, such as the engine deck or heads, which would require a shorter pushrod. Only if the engine has never been machined (well, a .010 cut would be OK) should you use stock length pushrods. Do a search here on checking pushrod length or something similar to find the pushrod length you need. You can make an adjustable pushrod by cutting 3/4" out of a pushrod, tapping the cut ends to 5/16", cut a bolt off or use "allthread" and a couple nuts to lock the pushrod to different lengths as you check the pattern on the top of the valve stem, which should be centered and as small (short travel across valve stem) as possible. You can use carbon paper, magic marker or whatever to mark the valve stem. You can then order pushrods to the length you need, they come in .050 length increments, from most pushrod makers. Smith Brothers do this as a specialty and have fast service, but you pay for it.
Good Luck,

Dan
