1966 Fairlane....Which way to go???????
Hello. I have a 1966 Fairlane GT. I have had several different engines (390 2x4, 406 tri power, 427 med. riser, 427 high riser) in it since I got it at the age of 14 (neighbor owned it, I wanted it, but had a $5000 price tag. Let's just say I mowed a lot of lawns that summer). Anyway, I don't really know what way to go with it now. Y'all have always been a great help, so I am turning to y'all for help. What engine do y'all think is worthy of being under my hood? I have a 427 Genesis block with a 4.310 bore. My only requests are- BIG POWER, STREETABLE, AND IT MUST BE SOMETHING THAT WILL  THE CROWDS.

F/L GT...didn't they come with the 390? Is it worthy of a quality restoration? I know that doesn't meet all the requirements (big power), but with the 2x4 it would look great and be streetable...
If it isn't suitable for a resto, it would only depend on cubic dollars...I'd do a 2x4 manifold with Kieth Craft heads on the Genesis with a 428 crank...that would definitely qualify... What transmission? |
I had a 67 GT 4-Speed. It had the 320 HP (335 in 66) 390 with a Holley. I love the size of the car and the vertical headlights. The interiors were very nice. These cars have yet to be discovered. I wish I had never sold it.
I would have to do the 390. Oh to be 20 again. Bob |
My car technically is a "restored" car. I still have the original 390 and toploader in my garage. I bought another toploader, installed it in the car, and now am at the engine stage...........kinda thinking about 800hp, 2x4.....Robitnik anyone?

I had a 1967 Fairlane 500 with factory 390 and 4 speed, maroon with black bench seat interior. I recently sold it and it left Indiana for New Zealand. I had 427 S.O.in my garage, but kept it a 390 original. I would either stay factory 390 or go all out nuts with it. Fun cars either way! Good luck with yours!

Been watching eBay for the right one for a long time. If I were to deviate from my Mustang with high-strung small block devotion to follow another Ford lineage, I would have to put 514 etc. bigger for the bigger.

I'd go BIG, HUGE, MASSIVE block, and shoot for 803 horse power!

One of our local Drag Racers here runs Pro Stock w/ a 460 punched out to 514 in a 2 door Orange Ford Fairmont and kicks out over 1000 hp. Sprays a little juice in it I think.
Great Looking Car and gets down the quarter mile pretty quick too. I love the 67 Fairlane 500 GT and I have looked for one to buy recently. Great lines and I agree with Bob that it hasn't been discovered yet. Clois |
Heres a pic of a '66 from e-bay. '67 was virtually the same style. Nice ride.

One other stipulation, it must be an FE based on the gesesis block.. 460's weigh too much and small blocks are NOT my thing.

Your missing sumpin: watcha gonna do with it?
800HP is a useless waste of money unless you can get it "to the ground". The only difference is gonna be a little noise and smoked tires. You can smoke just as many tires with 425HP as 800HP. If your gonna tub it; narrow the rear coupled to a ladder suspension and throw some strange axles in it rolling on 12.5/32-15's then you can have some meaningful fun. Otherwise; you'll never feel it in the seat of your pants so it becomes a lot of money for only something to talk about. In other words; "bragging rights" for HP but you can't do anything with it. Not much practicality (or fun) in that. I might add; if you had experienced a car "breaking loose" on you in 3rd gear at 75MPH then you wouldn't be asking the question. The car no longer is fun to drive because your afraid to get on it. Been to that show too.
(BTW: I really like that year body style). I'd probably throw what ever BB came in the car and beef it up a little for an added boost but you can still hook it up all the way through the gears. But I'm old; so what do I know. |
