1963 427 Ford Cracked block, Can it be saved?
I have a 1963 Ford 427 motor. I am getting ready to rebuild the motor and we found a 4" crack at the right rear freeze plug, it gets worse some won bored the block 60 over, is it time to buy a reproduction block? :CRY:

I'd quit while you're ahead with the block. It's time for a Pond or Genesis. With an 0.060" overbore you've got to have v-e-r-y thin cylinder walls. If you're really intent on saving it I wouldn't spend one dime till I had it sonic checked.

Cracked block

The motor came out of my Boat, I have a 408 W stroker in my Cobra.

Roy,
I had a 428 CJ that I had bored to .060 and given all the clearances being correct it was extremely nerve racking to get stuck at a long stop light for fear of over heating. Many people sleve these things and never have a problem, but I would be uneasy doing that. A .030 over bore is not problem and works great even at long stop lights. Ultimately it is your decision but if it were me.....

FWIW some of the early 427 blocks like yours can be overbored .060 and live a happy life. I'd have it sonic mapped and see then what your dealing with. The crack can be fixed. Sometimes if they is one freeze crack there are others. You can mag the block to see how bad it is. Is the .060 bore fresh or was it run like that? What's the condition of the bores now? Taper, scratches etc...? Sorry for such a late response here.

Cracked Block
We pulled the motor in May to rebuild the heads. it only had 130 / 170 compression and wouldn't idle right and was running on 7 cylinders. I got the heads off the cylinders appeared to be ok, they still had hone marks in them and no ring ledge. After rebuilding heads and putting in the water at Havasu it run very strong, then started smoked to like crazy. So pull it again sent it to Speed o Motive in West Covina, CA (They built the motor in my Cobra 408W) had it maged, that when we found the crack. They said it wasn't bored straight? Come to find out the block was bored .60 over but the piston were only .30 over. I have been told some marine engine are set up that way so they can run at high RPMs?
I think I'm going put the block on eBay and buy a new Genisis block and be done with it. The motor is a matching # 1963 427 Center oilier built by Clay Smith Racing back in the 70's.
