FE expansion tank question..
I'm contemplating installing an expansion tank on my 427 S/O in my Lone Star to add a little more "correctness" to it. I'm concerned about tank to hood clearance issues. Any Lone Star owners with a FE and an expansion tank out there??

You could do that without a problem, depending on what the tank is made of, you could either solder, silver solder, or braise it. |
The original question hasn't been answered and I can't help with the clearance issue. I can add, however, that the brass expansion tanks tend to leak unless you're very lucky. After my limited experience with them (three re-solders and still leaking) I decided to go with a stainless steel tank from Southern Automotive. No more leaks.

The type of solder typically used does not have enough Tin in it to provide any structural strength. The vibration shakes it apart, especially with the firmer suspension and radical cams that Cobras tend to posess. Change to Silver Solder applied correctly and alot of the problems will go away.

As an HVAC contractor I do a lot of silver soldering. I've got some 45%, 15% and some 5% (econo solder jobs..:LOL: ) on my truck. With a very thin wall brass tank it'll be somewhat difficult to control temps with the comparitively high melting point of silver solder. The thin brass tends to warp and buckle, sometimes even splitting. I can soft solder with 95/5 (tin antimony)which has a shear strength approaching siver solder's.

No problem with clearance on the LS. I used the Dove aluminum tank with the drivers side outlet with no issues. Theres pics in my gallery if needed. Brad W. |
Since it is brass, your bet bet would be to braise it then, you will get good strength out of the weld, and it is a low temp. process. But the stainless steel one might be your best bet, they probably have one already configured for the drivers side. jimig@standardtransmission.com

Thanks to all for offering help (one of the board's strong points) ...
Southern Automotive has a really good looking polished, 100% stainless steel expansion tank that duplicates that factory stamping v-e-r-y closely. It's $425 plus shipping. I went that route... I guess you get what you pay for. I really don't need another do it/mod it yourself project anyway. Dave |
