Long term engine build/storage
As I put together an FE for my kitcar, it will be a relatively long period of time from when the engine is assembled to when I am able to run it. Possibly as long as six months.
Since many FE's go into similar situations, I am hopeful I can learn from others on a recommended assembly lube and a priming/startup procedure for the motor. Does anyone know of a recommended procedure and/or products thanks Paul |
Pre-lube, pre-lube, pre-lube.. Can't say it enough.. Pull the distributor. Get a 1/4" drive long extension, either a 1/4" drive 1/4" or 5/16" deep well socket (CRS kickin' in..). and a real heavy duty reversible 1/2" drill. Chuck the long extension in the drill with the right socket. Remember, counter clockwise is the FE's distributor rotation so put the drill in reverse. Prelube the snot out of it. Rotate the crank 90deg and prelube again and repeat till you get back to the first pre-lube. It would be nice if you could pull the valve covers to establish rocker shaft oil flow too.

Storage of a motor
Paul If your motor is not together, don't put it together. Put the short block in a double bag with moisture bags to keep out dampness. Go to the marine store and get a spray fogger kit and spray the whole motor down inside and out, seal the bags and put the engine off the floor or ground. I don't believe in leaving a motor on an engine stand for long periods. I have proof the the back cylinder come out of round from .001-.0022". The heads spray with oil or WD-40 and bag them too. Assembly the motor when you are ready for it. I fog my motor in the winter, run new oil and filter to operating temps and add a bottle of Lucas oil stablizer. Re move the rocker shafts, and plug the exhaust with moisture bags. Change plugs in the spring, reinstall the rocker shafts, but remove my lifters to drain the oil, anti pump lifters not drain back. Fire it up out side. I now have a 3 quart perluber accusump that I use befor startup. Works great. This works for me. I am not a fan of rotating the motor every month. Under the oil clings to the metal parts, you will get dry parts. I did the Lucas challenge in my tow truck and let the truck sit for 3 months. Without Lucas valve and motor noise for the first 10 seconds, then the motor was quiet. With the additive same test no noise on startup. I use 10-40w oil. Try it in your own car or truck and see what happens. Rick Lake
