Alternator in an FE

I purchased a Tuff Stuff 60 amp 1-wire alternator for my 427 FE using the original alternator brackets. The alternator appears to be too deep (doesn't fit between the cylinder head and the bracket and the V-grove does not align with the v-grove on the balancer). The dimension from the back of the alternator and the center of the v-grove is about 5-3/4".

Does anybody make a shallow case that will fit?

Can't you just change to length of the 'bushing\spacer' that goes over the lower mounting\pivot bolt that holds the bottom of the alternator in place? Thats what I did, in order to line up the pulleys.

An extra washer or two, I think I used, on either side of the spacer.

I had the same problem with a Tuff Stuff alternator, 60 amp 1 wire. The rear cover that encases the the rear bearing won't fit between the bracket and the cylinder head...right?
If you try to add spacers to this particular alternator you end up with improper alignment on your pulleys.
I contacted Jeg's and explained what was going on and the tech I was speaking with knew immediatly what I was talking about.
I returned the 60 amp to Jegs (where I had originally purchased it) and they replaced it with an 80 amp unit that was NOT a single wire, almost the same cost but an external voltage regulator is now required..but it did fit....barely.

I bought a reman Motorcraft 61A alternator from NAPA for $40. It bolted on and worked perfectly.

Excaliber: No, the mounting doesn't seem to be the problem. The overall depth of the alternator is the issue.

Burgs: Adding spacers will only push my alignment off further.

Lineslinger: With the 80 amp alternator were you able to run an ampmeter or did you have to change to a voltmeter gauge?

Blykins: What is the dimension from the very back of the alternator to the center of the v-grove. Is this a 1-wire alternator?

I used a Ford Racing alternator and needed only one washer, with the stock spacer, to pull the back of the alternator off the Cylinder head. It seamed to line right up with the March pulleys, and with 500 miles, so far so good.

It is a 1-wire alternator. As for the dimension, I'm not sure. I'd run out and check but the car is about 2 hours away from me right now.
