need help identifying a fe engine
i bought this engine of ebay for a $100 and the guy i bought it from said it was a 390. can anyone tell me if these numbers mean anything to prove that it is a 390? i found casting number C7ME-A on the right side of the block. i found C8AE-H on the heads. it has a 2bbl carb. and intake on it. i don't have the the engine ripped apart other that the intake and valve covers off to see what kind of condition it was in. so can anyone please help?! thanks in advance.

It is probably a 390. Only way to tell for sure is to measure the bore and see what number is on the crank. I have a couple of C7ME-A's and they are all 390's even though some books say that number should be for a 428. My money would be for a 390 for $100. Jim

C7ME-A could be a 390 or 428. The only way to know for SURE, is to pull a head and check the bore size.
But check out this link from the Ford FE forum, and follow the link for the drill test.... 332-428 Ford FE Engine Forum I'd bet it's a 390 though, if it's a 2 barrell. |
Without opening it up it is hard to be exact. Ford used the same casting # in several incarnations. I don't have my complete casting book in here, but the one lists a C7ME-A block as a 428. It could be either, or something else. #'s off the crank and rods,etc as well as bore size can tell for sure.

So, what are you going to do with it?
I am looking for a crank and I am not rich. :D |
352= 4' bore 3.5"stroke
390= 4.050" bore 3.78 stroke 406= 4.125" bore 3.78" stroke 428 =4.125" bore 3.98" stroke( externaly ballanced ) 427 =4.230" bore 3.78" stroke |

I think the bore of a 406/428 is 4.130", Displacement of a 428 is actually 427 cubic inches. and the bore of a 427 is 4.233" . Displacement of a 427 is actually 426 cubic inches. The bore of a 360 is the same as a 390, 4.050" |
I had a C7ME-A block once. It was a 390....and had thin cylinder walls. It had not been bored before and .030" would about take it to the limit on the thrust side of one cylinder.
It could be a 428 or a 390. Pop the freeze plugs out and look for a "428" mark on the outside cylinder wall. Does it have any weld marks on the rear of the block? |
Another trick to telling if it is an original 428 is to pull the center freeze plug and look inside, only the 428 engine block has "428" cast into the water jacket and it can be seen with a simple flashlight.

well i pulled the heads off tonight. and to my disappointment it is a 390. do as anyone know where to get some performance parts so i can hop it up? i'm thinking about edelbrock heads, intake, carb and cam. but i also want to lighten up the bottom end or beef it up with forged parts? can i increase the cid. by increasing the rod length?
|
Sorry about your misconception. Many things can be done as you mentioned. Stroker Scat crank, LaMans rods or similar, pistons, alum. heads ported/polished, Vic intake and port matched, Demon carb/Holley, good flowing headers & exhaust, ect..........
All that is needed is $$$ Get a figure & we'll help you more. |

So what are you saying, that you should stay away from 390 engines due to the thin walls? I may have a chance at two 60's era motors in the near future. Not sure of their condition yet, but now you have me thinking twice. Should I pass them up? |
Trueoo7, What Sal said! 390 is a good call all around. It's the 427 that had 'thin walls'.
|
RacingDude, In your original post "The guy who sold you the engine said it was a 390". Why be dissapointed? Atleast he was honest. It's a good engine. Sell it for 200.00 and double your money. Just a thought.
